new to co, just moved out for college and trying to figure out whether or not its worth buying a bike out here this time of year cause i have no idea how long the riding season is around here. I'm in the boulder area and i'm guessing it gets pretty snowy soon, but are winters ridable? thanks for any advice

Hey, Colorado Springs born and raised, but have two uncles up in/near Boulder. How's CU treating you? Most of the winter IS ridable. I got my first bike last August and sold it this past April with another 3800 miles added to the clock. Granted I was considered insane for riding in weather below 40F... It just depends on what you're willing to do.

thanks for getting back so soon, cu's awesome so far just hate not having a way of getting around. Ive seen a lot of people w/ bikes around but just thought i'd ask, I figure they prob keep the roads pretty clean here in the winter since they're used to more snow here which was my main concern. Ive been looking on boulder craigslist and haven't found much, but i'll keep looking.

Just for your knowledge, Boulder is one of the most expensive cities (except for the mountain towns) here in Colorado. Check out Denver, Fort Collins, etc. None of those are too far away. They tend to keep the roads pretty clear, plus it snows less in that part of the state than you're probably thinking. Most of the time you won't have any snow on the ground. Also, if you find one you want around here in the Springs before I leave for phoenix on the 16th I'll be more than happy to check it out for you. What kind of bike are you looking for? First bike? Feel free to IM me any time, I'll get back to you ASAP.

The Pueblo Bikers United are hoping for a three-peat on Saturday when they line up against a team of law enforcement officers in the 28th annual Toy Bowl flag football game.

Kickoff is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. at the Pueblo County High School stadium.

Admission is $5 or a new toy.

"Next to the Bell Game and the Cannon Game, this is one of the biggest rivalries in town," said Mike Cisneros of Pueblo Bikers United. "Both teams always get pumped up for this game. The intensity on the field is incredible."

Cisneros said the bikers are hoping to win their third game in a row. They defeated the cops 32-21 last year and 36-35 in 2005.

The law enforcement team is composed of players from the police department, sheriff's deputies, Colorado State Patrol troopers and Department of Corrections employees.

The cops lead the series 15-12.

Bikers take Toy Bowl ‘three-peat’
Annual fundraiser provides toys for needy children at Christmas.
By NICK BONHAM
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

When the final seconds of the 28th annual Toy Bowl expired Saturday, the Bikers revved up their hogs and rode off into the windy horizon with another victory.

Bikers, 33. Cops, 24.

"Three-peat! Three-peat! Three-peat!" was the chant of Biker fans.

The real winners Saturday, of course, are the needy children of Pueblo.

Sponsored by Pueblo Bikers United, the Toy Bowl is the attention-getter and cash fundraiser leading up to the annual Toy Run, where hordes of bikers collect and deliver toys for 28 local agencies to distribute before Christmas.

More than 800 fans watched the flag football game at Pueblo County High School's Hornet Stadium, the site of the traditional rivalry that pits bikers against area law enforcement employees - city police, state troopers, sheriff deputies, correctional officers, etc.

Annette Bobo, PBU treasurer, said $1,100 was made through the $5 gate admission and six bags of toys were collected. Gate admissions will help purchase toys in December.

Law enforcement ball carrier LeRoy Mora (left) runs into biker Gary Johnson during the first half of the 28th annual Toy Bowl flag football game Saturday.

The first half was dominated by the Cops team. With a few seconds remaining before halftime, Cops kicker Mike Showers - who plays for the Denver Titans, a semipro team with the Colorado Football Conference - booted a 47-yard field goal to take a 17-14 lead.

"That was a 47-yard field goal with room to spare, brother," said Tony Wright, sports director at KCSJ-AM radio, who volunteered as game announcer. "This is grass-roots Pueblo right here. These teams are playing some ball, man, putting on a show."

The second half, however, was all Bikers.

"We were kind of sloppy in the first half, especially on defense" said Bikers' defensive end J.T. Trujillo, who also is the PBU president. "We made a few changes at the half and that's what did it."

Bikers' defenders, who didn't lay a hand on Cops' quarterback Scott Alire the entire first half, sacked the veteran three times in the second.

Bikers' defender David Hill had a key takeaway from a Cops' receiver with 6:50 left in the game. hat more or less signaled the end for the boys in blue, as the Bikers continued to roar down the field and control the pace of the game.

"We're going to win it next year," Alire told his team after the loss.

The Bikers, who celebrated their third consecutive win, closed within two games of the Cops for the series lead, 15-13.

"This almost didn't happen this year," said Pueblo County Sheriff's Deputy Ron Martinez, a team captain. "We didn't know when the game was until September, and we only had three practices."

"It's tough to get guys together, especially when there are cops who all work different shifts," Alire said. "But like we said before the game: ‘The real winners are the kids.’ "

The Toy Run is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Dec. 1 outside South High School.

Bikers Toy Run Saturday
By NICK BONHAM
THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN

Hopefully there'll be lovely weather for a bike ride together to benefit local youth on Saturday.

Instead of sleigh bells ringing, motorcycles will be revving for the 30th annual Toy Run, which is slated to leave South High School and snake through town at 11 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service, there's a slight chance of snow Friday night and Saturday morning, but if conditions are bad the run is still on.

"If it's bad weather bring your vehicles because we want to get all the toys we can for these kids. That's what it's all about," said Mike Cisneros, spokesman for Pueblo Bikers United which sponsors the event.

Cisneros said he hopes to see 1,000 bikes turn out for the event (annual averages range from 200 to 1,000, he said). The bikers will deliver toys to 20 local agencies who will then distribute the gifts to needy children for Christmas.

A majority of the toys collected for Saturday's run were donated or bought through cash donations made at the annual Toy Bowl held in October. The Toy Bowl pits Bikers vs. Cops in a fun-filled flag football game which the Bikers have won the past three years.

As usual, the run and proceeding poker run happen Saturday. The agencies pick up the gifts at an undisclosed location on Sunday.

Following is the route the bikers will take from South High to its destination, Larsen's Automotive & Tire, 701 W. Fourth St.

The procession will travel east on Northern Avenue to Santa Fe Avenue, north on Santa Fe to 13th Street, west on 13th to West Street and south on West to Larsen's.

Cisneros said that PBU believes their Toy Run to be the longest running in the country, but "if anyone has any info contrary to our beliefs, let us know. We only know what we've been told."

Fugitive caught in New Mexico

CANON CITY - A Canon City woman, on the lam for eight months after her conviction for careless driving that resulted in paralysis of a former police officer, was apprehended Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.

Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies apprehended Karen Price, 53, about noon. She is being held without bail pending extradition to Colorado.

Bernalillo deputies were acting on a tip that originated with Colorado Department of Corrections investigator Richard Wren, who had tracked Price's address through correspondence she was sending to a family member who would then forward the mail to Price's son, Stephen Garrett, a DOC inmate.

"It was a team effort that started in May and involved the DOC, the inspector general's office, intelligence officers from Colorado State Penitentiary and the Canon City Police Department," Wren said. "Our job is to gather intelligence on criminal activity by tracking info that is coming into the prison. We supplied the information and the police department did the leg work."

Lt. David Knowles of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said his office arrested Price on a tip detectives received from Colorado authorities.

Fremont County District Court Judge David Thorson issued a bench warrant for Price April 6 after she failed to appear in court following her April 3 conviction on misdemeanor careless driving causing injury and failure to yield when proceeding from a stop sign. The trial was held in Salida on a change of venue due to extensive media coverage of the case.

Price was found guilty of running over former Canon City police officer Roger Parsons, then 42, as he was riding his motorcycle in May 2005. Parsons suffered serious head injuries, more than 40 broken bones and is paralyzed as a result of the accident.

"I'm glad they finally caught her. It seems like she was a coward for running," Parsons said. "I thank the DOC - they did a great job of finding her and went above and beyond what they would normally do."

Since the accident, Parsons lost his job as a Canon City police officer after nearly 12 years on the force. He settled a wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuit he filed against the city of Canon City in September. As a result, the Colorado Municipal Corporation is paying Parsons $125,000 on behalf of the city.

Santa arrived in Pueblo Saturday dressed in black and riding a Harley.

Thousands of leather-clad elves followed behind him bringing hundreds of toys and treats for Pueblo's needy children, all part of the 30th annual Pueblo Biker's United Toy Run.

"Christmas has arrived in black today," said an elated J.T. Trujillo, president of PBU. "The weather cooperated for us and the people came out with big hearts. We were asking for a $1 donation and people were giving us $5, $10 and $20 bills. When it comes to the kids, people in this town are generous."

The toys and money gathered at Saturday's fundraising motorcycle run will be distributed today to representatives from local agencies who work with children. The toys will be given to the children for Christmas.

Early Saturday, motorcycles of many makes and models, most loaded with toys, gathered at the South High School parking lot to begin the annual run.

Mike Cisneros, a spokesman for PBU, said early Saturday organizers were worried the turnout for the annual ride through the city would be low because of the cold, damp weather that fell Friday night.

"I was up all night looking out the window to see if it was snowing," Cisneros said just prior to the start of Saturday's run. "When I saw the freezing drizzle this morning, I thought, ‘Oh no, here we go again.’”

For the past two years, the Toy Run has been hampered by snowy, icy conditions. Those runs were still held, but participation was considerably lower than previous events.

"This year, the weather's great and we've got a lot of people out here to support us," Cisneros said.

Santa Claus, aka Bob Aldrich (right), and his elf, aka Shane Jamnick, lead hundreds of bikers on the annual Toy Run on Saturday.

Organizers estimated that more than 1,200 bikers, riding everything from Harleys to crotch rockets and even a motor scooter, turned out for what is believed to be the oldest toy run west of the Mississippi River.

Dick Schaffer and his daughter, Robyn, were among the thousands of bikers who took advantage of the mild but windy morning to participate in the run.

"I've been doing this for about six or seven years and I tell you today's weather's great,' said Schaffer dressed in his leathers and black do-rag.

"Last year it was so snowy that we had to go in the truck," said Robyn. "We didn't want to miss it because it's such a fun thing to do."

In addition to bringing a load of stuffed animals for the children, Schaffer said he also had some little gifts he was going to throw to his friends standing along the parade route.

"Every year they're out there watching us and every year I throw them a little something. This year I got them a little Crown Royal," he said, showing off the miniature liquor bottles tightly bound in bubble wrap.

Eric Trujillo, whose played for PBU in the Toy Bowl, the annual football game between police and bikers, was riding in his first Toy Run.

"I was going to do it last year, but the weather was so bad I didn't end up coming out," he said. "It's nice today, a little windy but not a bad day to ride, especially since we're doing it for the kids."

Along with PBU members, there were members of other riding clubs who turned out to support the cause.

Donna Wayt, Mary Amaro, Ronda Reynolds and Nancy Simons were among the large contingent of American Legion Riders who participated in the run.

"We wouldn't miss it for the world," said Wayt. "We've been through rain and snow, and today, the wind, but it's not that bad. We do it to help out the kids, so it's worth it no matter what the weather's like."

In the end, the bikers collected nearly two truckloads of toys from Saturday's run to go with the hundreds of other toys collected during the Toy Bowl game held in October.

"This is going to make a Merry Christmas for a lot of kids out there," said a smiling Trujillo, who participated in his 30th Toy Run. "That's what it's all about, helping the kids."
