The only things required to run Biodiesel on a modern diesel engine are a heating unit for the fuel (to get it to flow well), and 2 tanks. You need one tank for your Biodiesel and one tank for standard diesel (still used for starting until the Bio, and engine are warm enough to work properly).

Ive seen a Biodiesel powered VW Jetta that a guy built in his garage. He basically used old cooking oil from resturants for fuel which was free save the hassle of hauling it.

He built a home filtering unit to filter out the crud before fueling up and fabbed the fuel switch and heating unit himself.

The performance was pretty much equal to regular diesel with the Jettas turbodiesel.
