Not many places rent motorcycles because the risk is high. Those that do tend to rent cruisers and sport touring machines. AFAIK, you have to provide proof of how long you've been riding and your own insurance.

I have rented one myself, but not in North America, it was in Rhodes, Greece for a day. (650cc dual sport bike). Easy experience, just sign on the dotted line, they provide a helmet (2 in this case) and insurance, you just top it up on gas when you are done.

Fun stuff. And a great way to try out a bike as well...

I know High_Side has rented a Harley-Davidson in the USA for him and his wife just (last?) year.

I rented a motorbike when I visited Las Vegas. It was a ST1300 - rented for 3 days put 850 miles on it. It was very enjoyable, but very expensive. $300+ a day. They check for M endorsement (Eagle Rider). They go over the bike with you beforehand. They did not check how long I had been riding. They did ask me to take a ride around the facility/parking lot before leaving. They were very helpful and offered to secure my luggage (wasn't necessary I was prepared). They also pointed out all the biker hang outs in the area. I wouldn't go though. Even though I'm a motorbike rider I'm not a motorcyclist per say and a picture of me might be reminiscent of some of the rather dorkier people in the MSF course pictures...

In any case, it was the most enjoyable riding I've ever had and I highly recommend it if you have the money to blow. I'm glad I did it then as I certainly don't have that kind of money to blow these days.

Good luck, buddy and ride safe.

When my Buell's stator failed Gail's HD provided a Harley Heritage for two weeks.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Rented a 250 Honda in Zanzibar for 10 days. Easy as pie and no problems
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

Eaglerider.com is the big one and I have used it a couple of times. Compared to the little bikes that I have rented in little countries they are a dream. Renting a Harley in the "off-season" Jan or Feb for us Canadians is super-cheap in my opinion and the bikes are always in top condition. Every winter vacation that I take to the US will have me using their services - at least until I pick up a place in Phoenix and run the bikes down there in the fall - which may really happen
