Re: The wave
I got one wave today. That's it. I noticed some very surly looking riders out there today.
Doesn't matter...I can still be sociable and wave or nod.

First Wave
I was a bit startled when I first noticed other motorcyclists waving at me. I was riding down the highway fully engaged in visual scanning when I noticed a man on a big touring bike on the other side of the highway give me the wave. As those on the other side of a divided highway do not present much of a risk, they get almost no attention, so I wonder how many perfectly nice motorcyclists had waved at me before I even noticed. Wave back? You bet! After a while I become bold and from time to time I would even initiate the wave.
Safe Travels,
Richard

Re: The wave
I wave at most approaching riders, with the exception of scooters or any rider who's knees, ankles or toes are visible. I don't wave when on a divided highway.

Re: The wave
We have a divided highway called the Coquihalla. It's a mountain highway. Bikers always wave on that one. Maybe it's the isolation factor.
But on our regular highway through the municipalities, waving is seldom seen. Too much traffic and too much congestion to take your eyes off the road for even a second.

Re: The wave
Here in Utah and throughout the West, the median in a divided highway is often a couple dozen feet wide, and in some places nearly 100 yards depending on the terrain. Waving at that distance seems sorta silly to me...
Also, we've got chapters from three 1% MCs operating throughout Northern Utah and into the surrounding states -- a LOT of riders out here are pretty surly. I wave anyway, we're all riders first.

Re: The wave
I think B2C is correct. In the city, in traffic, I don't have time to wave, but on the highway out in the middle of nowhere West Texas, almost every motorcyclist I passed gave a wave.
Jack of the Green: I can understand not waving a squids, but what is wrong with those on scooters?

Re: The wave
I don't wave to scooters out of concern for their riders. I'm not sure they have the skill to drop a hand and still maintain control of their vehicle.

Re: The wave
I wave when it's safe to do so and nod at other times. Doesn't matter if I get a wave back [although it's great when I do] because the other rider may not have seen me in enough time or is shifting, or just may not want to. After watching "Why We Ride" I just like to acknowledge that we're part of something that not everyone does and that's special. Ok, that's my dime.
