New bike day!

#1 Unread post by Grey Thumper »

Life's short and I'm getting old, so for the first time (and against all logical thinking), I decided to buy a bike brand new.

Freshly delivered:

And here next to its older brother (can you tell I like white vehicles?).

Incidentally, the bikes don't have seats because the cats scratch them :)

That looks like fun on two wheels. Congrats on your purchase.

Just where do you store your seats for cat-proofing? In the white IKEA cabinet?

Objectively speaking, it's better than my old bike in pretty much every way. It's faster, lighter, nimbler, has better weather protection, etc.

Subjectively speaking . . . well, that's not so clear cut. My old bike feels more . . . substantial somehow. The tractorlike thrum of it, the clunk of the shifter, the heaviness of the clutch and throttle. Everything is a bit heavier and slower, but there's something reassuring about it. The new bike feels oddly delicate (surprising, considering it's an "adventure" bike"). Small example: my old bike has big, chunky switches that clacked into place. On the new bike, the switches are tiny and feel rubbery, like they're just activating circuit boards.

Anyway, no diss on the new bike though. It's a pleasure to ride, and much more comfortable at the end of the day. There's just a bit more tactile satisfaction with the old bike. Fortunately, I don't need to sell it at the moment (and I don't want to anyway).
