VANCEBURG -- Lewis County Relay for Life is taking its show on the road for its next event, as teams sponsored by Clarksburg Christian Church and Vanceburg Baptist Church will take part in a scenic motorcycle ride Saturday, April 16.

Sponsors are calling the event the Redbud Motorcycle Ride for the colorful buds that are expected to bloom along the route.

The route covers four counties and approximately 100 miles round trip, starting at Clarksburg Christian Church, traveling Kentucky 9 east to Grayson in Carter County.

From Grayson, riders will take Kentucky 7 south into Elliott County, turning at Sandy Hook on to Kentucky 32, traveling east to Blaine in Lawrence County.

In Blaine, riders will take Kentucky 201 north back into Grayson, and will return to the church for refreshments and prizes.

Lewis County Relay for Life Chair Carol Gilbert said the planned route was inspired by Byron Powers, who has also been involved in Relay for Life events.

"He's ridden that way before in the spring, and he said the red buds are so beautiful that time of the year," said Gilbert.

The onset of spring and warmer temperatures allows Relay for Life organizations throughout the area to do more outdoor activities.

Mason County Relay for Life has held a motorcycle ride the past two years.

In Lewis County, a motorcycle ride there for Relay for Life last autumn netted $600, said Gilbert.

"I hope we have a good turnout because it's for such a good cause," she said.

Registration for the event will begin at 10 a.m. at Clarksburg Christian Church on April 16, and the ride will start an hour later. The fee per bike is $15.

A meal will be served immediately following the ride. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
