Bikers expected to rumble into Memorial Day rally

Jonathan Schwab - Mail Staff Writer

About 3,500 motorcyclists are expected at the fourth annual Fallen Bikers Memorial Rally Friday through Sunday at Chaffee County Fairgrounds in Poncha Springs.

Unlike last year when the rally had events at the fairgrounds and in Salida, it will take place only at the fairgrounds.

Event organizer Elaine Allemang said there is enough going on with Bluegrass on the Arkansas Sunday and other Memorial Day weekend events in Salida, so keeping the rally at the fairgrounds will cause fewer disruptions in the city.

The rally was first held in May 2005 honoring two of Allemang's friends, Les "Dancer" Walker and Timothy Serles who died in a motorcycle wreck in New Mexico in May 2004. It honors all members of the motorcycling family who have lost their lives.

"It's always fun," Allemang said. "It's a good group of people."

She said police officers will attend the event but, "we have never had any problems."

The rally will start at 2 p.m. Friday with opening of the beer garden and food and motorcycle accessory sales.

Admission will be $10 Friday and Saturday and free after 3 p.m. Sunday. All profits will benefit fallen bikers. Gates will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Allemang said many participants are looking forward to evening concerts at the rally.

The concerts will begin at 5 p.m. with the "Peaceful Warriors," followed by "Avant Garage" at 7 p.m. and "Dude Suite" at 9 p.m.

Bands playing Saturday and Sunday will be "Dick's Little Big Band," "Money Shot," "Free Jam Society," and the "Fractures."

Allemang said she would "love" to have the people from Salida at the Salute to Veterans at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the Community Building at the fairgrounds. The salute will include a performance by bagpipers called the "Highlanders."

A new event will be a series of Texas Hold 'Em games at 5 p.m. Saturday. No money will be involved in the games which will be "just for fun," Allemang said.

There will be a hog roast from 4-5 p.m. Saturday.

Two events Allemang said will be "gobs of fun" are the bike rodeo at 3 p.m. Saturday and tattoo contests for adults and children at 1 p.m. Sunday.

She said the tattoo contest is one way to make the rally "family friendly."

Tattoo awards will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and motorcycle show awards will be at 5 p.m.

More information and a schedule of events is at www.memorialrally.com or by calling Allemang at 239-1580.

Bikers look to roll again in Toy Bowl
The 29th annual football game to benefit needy children is Saturday.

THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
The Pueblo Bikers United football team will be seeking their fourth consecutive win over the local law enforcement squad in the 29th annual Toy Bowl scheduled for Saturday at the Pueblo County High School stadium.

The annual fundraising flag football game pitting the "Men in Black" of the PBU and the law enforcement blue will kick off at 10:30 a.m.

The law enforcement team is composed of players from the Pueblo police and sheriff's departments, Colorado State Patrol and Department of Corrections.

"Four in a row is going to be tough to do, but we're going to play hard and hope we can get another win," said Mike Cisneros, a spokesman for PBU. "Regardless of who wins on the field, it's the kids of Pueblo County who come out the winners in the end. That's what this game is all about."

The Toy Bowl was started by the bikers as a way to get toys to give to needy children at Christmas. The toys will be distributed during the 31st annual Toy Run, scheduled Dec. 6.

Admission to the game is $5 or a new toy. All proceeds from the event will be used to purchase additional toys that will then be given to more than 20 local agencies that work with children in Pueblo County.

This year's Toy Bowl will be played in memory of Gary Aho, a longtime PBU supporter, who died May 15 in an auto accident.

The PBU team, led by 29-year veteran player J.T. Trujillo, is hoping to close the overall series record between the teams to within one win.

Although the bikers have won six of the last seven games, the cops lead the series 15-13.

The bikers defeated the law enforcement team 33-24 last year.

In addition to hosting the game, the PBU will also have concessions available as well as commemorative Toy Bowl T-shirts for sale at the game. All the proceeds will go toward the purchase of additional toys.

Anyone wishing to donate to the PBU may do so by sending donations to Pueblo Bikers United, P.O. Box 1, Pueblo, CO 81002.

Toy Run scheduled Saturday

It's time to rev up the motorcycle, throw on the leather and don that Santa Claus hat for the 31st annual Pueblo Bikers United Toy Run scheduled for Saturday.

The yearly motorcycle ride through the city to benefit local needy children will begin at 11 a.m. in the South High School parking lot.

"The weather is supposed to be nice and we'd like to see at least 1,500 bikes," PBU spokesman Mike Cisneros said. "We invite any and all bikers to join us. It doesn't matter what type of bike you ride, as long as it's street legal."

The forecast for Saturday is for sunny, warm and dry conditions with a high temperature near 58 degrees.

Should there be inclement weather, Cisneros said the run will be held with vehicles instead of bikes. The Pueblo Toy Run, believed to be the oldest such event west of the Mississippi River, serves as a fundraiser for toys that are distributed to needy children in Pueblo for Christmas.

Although a number of toys were collected during October's Toy Bowl, Cisneros said those donations were down because of bad weather on game day.

"We could use some more toys so we're encouraging everyone to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the run," he said. "We want to be able to provide toys to all those kids who need them."

Bikers also will be charged $1 to participate in the run. Proceeds will be used to purchase additional toys.

The run will take a slightly different route this year, ending at East High School.

The bikers will leave South High School, travel east on Northern Avenue to Santa Fe Avenue. They then will head north on Santa Fe to Eighth Street and east on Eighth Street to Troy Avenue.

The group will travel north on Troy to Constitution and north to MacNeil before ending in the East High School parking lot.

Cisneros said spectators are encouraged to line the run route in support of the event.

"We'd like for those not riding in the procession to join us on the street," he said. "It's always nice for us to see the support from the community."

Cisneros said commemorative buttons and a limited number of Toy Run T-shirts will be for sale at the beginning of the run.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Toy Run may do so at PBU, P.O. Box 1, Pueblo, CO 81002.

Well I missed this one. Yesterday morning got ready and bike had picked up a nail in rear tyre.

Spirit of the season gets bikers rolling
Large turnout means lots of toys for kids this Christmas.

THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN
The weather outside was delightful.

And as a result, an impressive number of motorcyclists turned out Saturday for the 31st annual Pueblo Bikers United Toy Run.

An estimated 1,200 cycles of all makes and models made the traditional holiday trek across town in revving good spirit to deliver toys and raise funds for the community's less fortunate youth.

The toys are expected to be picked up today by various community agencies, which will then disperse the gifts for the upcoming holiday.

On his plastic tricycle, 3-year-old Augie Aragon watched an endless stream of leather-clad bikers pour out of the South High School parking lot and onto Northern Avenue, en route to East High School clear across town. Augie's dad, Jan Aragon, helped direct bike traffic.

"This is the most bikes I've seen in six or eight years. Damn good turnout," said Aragon, the starting center for PBU's flag football team, which plays against a squad of law enforcement employees every year on the gridiron as the precursor fundraising event that leads up to Saturday's run.

"I was kind of worried about the turnout given the economy, but the bikers came out like they always do," Aragon said, walking next to Augie, his youngest child, as he pedaled down a South High sidewalk after the procession had left.

"Someday, hopefully (Augie) will be riding out here."

The ride to Belmont took about an hour. Equally impressive to the display of goodwill was the broad collection of bikes - choppers to Fat Boys, sidecars to trikes, speed and dirt bikes, to cruisers and Harley Davidsons, to old military bikes to BMWs; and bikes with all manner of paint jobs, decals and handlebars from Buckhorn.

"Wow! There's some beautiful bikes out here," said one woman standing along the sidewalk, watching the procession roll past.

The goal of every toy run is to attract 1,000 bikes, according to JT Trujillo, PBU co-president. More bikes equals more toys and donations.

There was some discussion among PBU organizers about the total number of bikes. Trujillo estimated the turnout at 1,200, while some folks thought it was more.

"This is the most bikes we've ever had," Trujillo said at East High.

"There has to be at least 1,500 here," one man told Trujillo.

Like Aragon, Trujillo, too, was worried about how the economy would affect participation.

"But the bikers came out like they always do for the kids," he said.

There is also a poker run Saturday, called the Frozen Monkey ride. This leaves Snozerillie's (406 Main St. Canon City) at noon. (Snozreille's was known as the Royal and also as Rumors in the past) not the same # since new ownership and still Rumors in 2008 phone book. New owners took over last year after ph book was already out. (this is a all brands ride but will be mostly Harleys and other Cruisers)

IT IS NOW NOON AND JUST RETURNED HOME AFTER GOING TO THIS RIDE AND FINDING OUT THAT IT IS CANCELED. seems that Snozerillies was open New Years Eve and hasnt opened since. Both bussiness phone and phone given for ride contact are disconnected.
