2006 Buell Lightning® Long XB12Ss on http://www.totalmotorcycle.com

An extended swingarm and increased fork rake give the new Lightning Long a 54-inch wheelbase, two inches longer than the Lightning XB12S. Fork rake is increased from 21 to 22 degrees and trail goes from 3.3 inches to 4.7 inches. The result is a streetfighter with more relaxed handling and expanded ergonomics better suited to taller riders. The tail section is longer and the seat is taller and wider, and offers more room for a passenger. There's also a larger under-seat storage compartment. Larger frame side panels give the Lightning Long a fuel-in-frame capacity of 4.4-gallons. Buell InterActive Exhaust, a valve in the dual-chamber muffler controlled by the ECM that adjusts exhaust flow, gives the Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin engine smooth torque delivery and optimized power. Like all Buell motorcycles, the handling remains quick and responsive. It is offered in Sunset Orange with Sunset Orange wheels, Midnight Black with Translucent Amber wheels, and Thrust Blue with Translucent Amber wheels, all with a Graphite Gray frame.

I like the effort to re-think the whole package but I can't fathom who picks those colours.

Pretty light for a 1200. Definitely looks like a Buell.

Cool I guess, but the first thing I'd be doing is changing that plastic for a different colour.

So many innovations that, even today, are barely seen in current naked sporty bikes; fuel in the frame, oil in the swingarm, belt drive, single disk perimeter front brake, muffler mounted completely beneath the bike. Just an amazing piece of engineering.

..... except for that inappropriate (for a sport bike) motor Harley stuck him with. I wonder if things would have turned out better for Buell Motor Co if H-D had allowed to go to Rotax for a modern motor years earlier?

Well . . . yeah. It was the weakest link, but Eric did the best he could with a fairly ancient engine design. Who knows what he could've come up with had he been able to work with an engine of his choice, much earlier on.

A lot of innovations are of little practical value, that is a lot of innovations are not improvements, or at least not cost effective improvements providing only a marginal benefit at a significant increase in cost. This might be why we don't see these Buell innovations in a lot of other bikes.

Should designers, engineers, stop innovating? Hell no.

Safe Travels,
Richard
