Brand new for 2012 is the Tiger Explorer, a flagship model for Triumph's Adventure range.
Building upon 2011's phenomenally successful Tiger 800 models, the Tiger Explorer is powered by an all-new, shaft-driven, three-cylinder engine in excess of 1200cc, delivering class-leading performance to the adventure touring class.

I'm game for any (seemingly) comfortable and versatile bike, and it's nice to see a Triumph triple in this class. Wish it didn't look so derivative though. Triumph has such a distinct heritage, they don't need to ape Ze Germans. Even just not having that totally unnecessary beak would help.

I sat on one at a recent motorcycle show and it is a heavy beast. The "capability for unpaved roads" piece is a bit of a stretch. My VFR would have the same "capability" (in a much lighter bike), but it would really not be an enjoyable experience. What this bike is, is a big semi-sport tourer that is trying to sell "adventure". This doesn't mean that it is a bad street-bike, but the marketing guys are trying to sell you something that you really shouldn't plan on using.

Triumph are hedging their bets here & might have made a mistake by trying to put too many specs on one model.
Is it an adventure bike? As said above it seems a bit heavy & cluttered for that. Also whilst I welcome attention to pillion comfort, having done many miles on the back of the Rocket, what true adventurer would set out with a passenger?
As a tourer it might work but I suspect it might struggle against other brands already in the market.
I also think the adjustable seat/bars height is a good sales feature as Tigers are quite high (as most adventure bikes) so this may well allow a broader range of customers.
It is totally against my instincts to fail a Triumph triple but I really am not sure about this one.
On consideration I will give it a cool vote - it IS a new Triumph triple & they ARE trying, just hope they are not trying too hard

I think it depends on YOUR definition of adventure...if you see adventure as single track and knarley off roading as adventure, then no...but either are the other bikes in the segment...even a KLR, DR650 or XR650 are heavy for that kind of work...but if you see adventure as not being afraid of travelling down a gravel or packed dirt road in comfort, then I think it is inline with what is offered by others...as for offering too much on one bike, look at the bikes that are selling...the more options that are on it, the quicker it moves off the show room floor...mogster wrote:Is it an adventure bike? I voted cool...would have been awesome, but I don't think you need 1200cc...I would purchase the 800 and be happier with the extra cash in my jeans, better fuel consumption and lighter weight...
I was more impressed by the new Honda NC700X that was on display at the bike show, since I just want something that has more suspension and better range...that will get a test ride when it hits the dealer...and yes, I know the Versys is a similar concept, as well as the V Stroms...but there is just something I like about the Honda...

As someone with two Triumphs, I'm going to be contrary and vote uncool. This bike is HEAVY. It's heavier than my Trophy 1200, and that's a heavy pig itself. It's a shaftie and it doesn't need to be. It's ugly, uglier than the Tiger 1050 and that was no beauty queen. It's expensive - it's in the same class as my V-strom DL1000, costs almost $16K, and weighs almost 100 lbs more. Would I spend all that money to replace the V-strom with a heavier bike? Nah.

I'm going to the international motorcycle show in New York tomorrow, and assume I'll see and sit on this bike there. So maybe I'll have a different opinion by this time tomorrow.......... stay tuned!
