I'm so conflicted about open-class sport bikes, I've sat out several of these polls. I can't help but admire the engineering and the visual design. And I'm a sucker for sport twins: KTM's, Ducatis, RC51's, etc.

But seriously- what would I ever do with all that power and performance? Besides track days...? My old lump of a Triumph Trophy is only 105hp, and in New Jersey I usually run out of running room long before I run out of motor on that bike.

No doubt the 1190RC8R is very cool, but part of me would rather see all that creative and engineering talent applied to something a little more "real world".

My thoughts exactly, and even on track days it's a rare few folks with the reflexes, eyesight, instinct and chuptza to get 100% outta these machines. And anyone who gets more than 50% outside a track is a felon, at least, here in the states they would be. Amortized against the cost, that's a lot of money to pay for the .003% of time you're using the extra performance.

Not that there aren't plenty of parallels in other markets. How many people ever get ALL the towing capacity out of their Ram Turbo Diesel? Or use every cubic inch of soccer mom space in their Nissan Quest? How many people manage to yawn the ENTIRE time they're driving their Toyota Corolla? Damn few, that's what.

Does it make the machine any less awesome just because so few people will ever fully unleash its awesomeness? Maybe not, but that's what these subjective ratings are all about. So for me, this KTM takes away a Cool, even though it probably deserves an Awesome.

But its sure nice to know ya got it :mrgreen: I look at the situation different then you guys, not that I think your wrong it's all about choice. I like to ride a little aggressive not crazy but spirited and I would rather have a bike that I can not out ride. I like knowing if I get myself into trouble the bike I am riding can help me get out of it and the fact that it is as sexy as Jessica Rabbit don't hurt. :laughing:

I don't know how many times that I have owned or ridden a new motorcycle and thought - "that's enough power - what more could I want?" But then you ride something with more and it is truly addictive. Not in a "I'm going to ride this like an idiot" kind of way but more in the riding a constant wave of torque and hp kind of way.

I really thought that my Superduke or VFR1200 had all the power I would ever require, but then I rode a new CBR1000 and it was a hoot. Super controllable but incredible fun. Handling to match. The only thing missing was comfort. You can't have it all, but you can have a great time for a short while.

Every experienced rider needs to try one of these.....then make their judgements.
