The new BMW R nineT Scrambler – a down-to-earth character beyond established conventions.


They were ridden by action heroes on the screen and scores of hobby racers entered mountain and beach races on them: the Scramblers. With deep-treaded tyres, a raised exhaust, somewhat extended spring travel and a relaxed seating position, Scramblers offered their riders in the 1950s to 1970s not just motorcycling fun on winding country roads but also great off-road capability and therefore an extended range of use. Thanks to Grey Thumper for the suggestion of putting up the new 2016 BMW R NineT Scrambler on the Cool Wall this week!

It is a new model (version of the NineT) that you should seen in dealerships shortly. No prices as of yet, but expect around $16k USA and $19 Canada...

It's quite good looking, especially for a company that isn't exactly known these days for making good looking bikes. And it's a nice take on retro styling, also unusual for a company that doesn't often do retro (odd considering its long history). I'd prefer a bigger seat and spoked wheels, but I assume those will be available as accessories (especially since the wheel sizes are the same as the previous gen GS).

With a lack of electronic doodads, it has a nice and uncomplicated appeal. As for being a scrambler, I'm sure it'll be fine on the kind of gravel and fire roads that most GS owners consider their off-pavement limit. Cool enough.

I voted: Uncool.

I never look at the vote before I vote and noticed I'm definitely in the minority, which is fine as we all don't have the same tastes. Uncool because I love the look of the NineT (naked), it's a great looking bike, I just feel as if BMW tried to make something out of the NineT that was more of a graphed on accessory than a "let's design it that way" type of bike. So I kinda frown on that, but I do get the idea and appreciate they want to get into that niche market there.

I'm wondering if it is possible we have reached a top in the "scrambler/adventure sport" popularity/styling as everyone seems to have one now and we will start to see the next move in the coming year or two.

Overall, though it's hard to fault the BMW NineT Scrambler, and versus what the competition is putting out, it's a real good looker.

Notes: When BMW launched the NineT a couple years ago it was a really nice change to their design philosophy, "due something differently but retro" and the NineT, while a little too expensive, was received very well and did well in their line up. Now BMW brings out another version, the Scrambler showing what the NineT customization is capable of, and the result is a Cool looking bike that very few would hate and quite a lot love. Well done BMW! And I'm with Grey Thumper, let's bring out some more Retro bikes!
