2013 Triumph Speed Triple Review

2013 Triumph Speed Triple

The icon. Redefined.

Speed Triple. Real world performance for riders who know. The definitive streetfighter. The benchmark. The best. In a word. Legend.

Triumph has taken all that’s good about the Speed Triple and created a new model. A new chapter in the legacy. All-new chassis is the sharpest tool in the box. All-new optional ABS from Nissin for the greatest stopping power. And that 1050cc triple. Oh yes, the engine. And the look? Short. Stubby. Aggressive. Twin headlights. Single sided swingarm. Alloy bars. Pure Speed Triple. Improved.

All-new chassis and riding position inspires total confidence with light and precise handling that is perfectly balanced for an incredibly planted and stable ride.

Triumph’s trademark twin headlights, single-sided swingarm and high-level exhaust have all been restyled for a more aggressive and contemporary look, as well as improved performance, while the soulful 1050cc triple has been refined and uprated with 7% more torque for an even more engaging experience.

The Speed Triple sports the kind of specification you would expect from a top-of-the-range naked sportster. Track derived specification includes four-piston Brembo brakes for eye-popping stopping power, fat alloy handlebars, fully-adjustable 43mm upside down forks for maximum control and a comprehensive instrumentation that includes lap timer and programmable gear shift light.

The Speed Triple also comes with optional anti-lock brakes for the first time and is available with a host of genuine accessories to personalize the look, performance and practicality of this exciting machine.

The boss of the naked sportsbike class just got a whole lot better.

With an all-new chassis Triumph’s most iconic model has moved to a whole new level. More nimble than before, the Speed Triple corners and stops like you will not believe.

What’s more, it’s powered by one of the all-time great powerplants and the revered 1050cc triple packs 7% more torque than its predecessor.

The legend continues.

2013 Triumph Speed Triple Key Features

Engine
Powering the Speed Triple is Triumph’s legendary 1050cc three-cylinder, producing an impressive 133bhp and a mighty 82 ft.lbs punch for effortless sports riding. The Speed Triple also features the 1050’s redesigned gearbox, for more positive and refined shifting action.

Chassis
At just 214kg fully fuelled, the latest Speed Triple is a whole 3kg lighter than the previous model. Front and rear wheels are each over one kilogram lighter, while the narrower frame and improved packaging allows for increased ground clearance and makes the machine feel incredibly light and nimble.

Styling
Twin headlamps up front are a modern interpretation of the classic ‘bug-eye’ look while classic Speed Triple cues remain throughout, including single-sided swingarm, twin silencers and that stubby, aggressive stance.

Security & Safety
Coded key immobiliser comes as standard. Sophisticated ABS is standard for the first time on a Speed Triple, while tyre pressure monitors are also available.

Suspension
The Öhlins suspension has been developed specifically for the Speed Triple R with both Öhlins and Triumph development riders involved in extensive evaluation tests of the units on the bike. The NIX30 forks, which separate the compression and rebound damping between the legs, have specific internals to suit the Triumph, as does the TTX36 shock.

Brakes & Tires
The Speed Triple uses uprated versions of Brembo’s Monobloc four-piston radial caliper. With 5% more stopping power than the Brembo units on the stock Speed Triple, the R’s calipers feature a tough anodised finish. ABS features as an optional extra. Pirelli Super Corsa SP tyres also provide added grip ideal for both road and track.

Wheels
The lightweight wheels are developed specifically for the Speed Triple R. Created from an 18.9kg solid lump of aluminium alloy, the rear wheel is forged by German company Otto Fuchs and finally machined by PVM into a 3.82kg wheel, with the front wheels also forged in the same way. Weighing 1kg less than the stock wheel, such a reduction is achieved by the forged wheel’s greater strength, meaning the rim can be reduced in thickness from 4mm to just 2.5mm. With the front 0.7kg and rear 1kg lighter than stock,
tests have shown the wheels’ inertia is reduced by 16% and 25% respectively due to the reduction in unsprung mass.

Stylinlg
Every Triumph ‘R’ model comes with some added subtle details including black anodised taper handlebars, signature red sub-frame which all make the Speed Triple R stand out distinctively. Add to that a carbon fibre tank cover, radiator shrouds and inner radiator from the same company that makes Lamborghini’s carbon components, you can see this bike is ready for the road.
