THE 2001 DUALSPORT LINE: STREET & OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY
In an age of specialization it's nice to own a motorcycle that not only meets the basics, like daily transportation, but adds some fun to the equation as well. Enter the DualSport bike - street-legal lighting and instrumentation combined with the lightweight agility of pure off-road machinery.
Thousands of riders have either learned to ride or rediscovered the fun of off-road riding with Suzuki DualSport bikes. Largely based on off-road bikes, these hybrid machines come with lights, speedometers and turn signals so they are also street-legal. They're versatile, inexpensive to own and maintain, and most of all, pure fun, thanks to their light weight, agility, and ability to go so many places.
Suzuki has done more to grow this market segment than any other manufacturer. How? By offering a complete line of street-legal dirt bikes. By loading up these bikes with advanced technology that was unimaginable 20 years ago, and by backing the Suzuki DualSport Riders Club, which hosts events and sponsors rides all over the country, promoting the safe, responsible use of off-road trails.
DR-Z400S
Based on the DR-Z400E off-road machine, Suzuki's DR-Z400S DualSport model combines the best off-road performance features with street-legal lighting and instrumentation for on/off-road capability. Tuned for a broad powerband and low-rpm torque, the compact 398cc, liquid-cooled engine is equipped with a four-valve cylinder head, 36mm CV-type carburetor, a 5-speed transmission, electric-start with an automatic decompression system, and a lightweight nickel-silicon-phosphorus-carbide plated cylinder and forged piston. A thermostatically-controlled fan has been added to the radiator on this model to maintain consistant operating temperature in city traffic.
The engine is mounted in a chrome-moly steel frame, similar to Suzuki RM motocross models, designed for torsional strength and light weight. Oil for the dry-sump lubrication system is carried in the main backbone and front downtube of the frame. Long travel, 49mm conventional-type front forks feature adjustable compression damping and preload, while the rear is supported by a preload and compression damping adjustable rear shock absorber linked to a lightweight aluminum swingarm. Front and rear disc brakes supply plenty of stopping power to the aluminum wheels and D.O.T.-legal DualSport tires.
The DR-Z400S shares the smooth, narrow profile of its off-road brothers with bodywork designed to allow the rider to move freely and shift weight back and forth. The left-side frame cover includes quick-release-type fasteners for easy air filter maintenence. Rounding off the package is street-legal lighting with a 55-watt headlight, and a unique compact instrument cluster with a digital display. Instrument functions include speedometer, odometer, twin trip meters with addition/subtraction capability, clock, timer and stopwatch functions.
