2005 Moto Guzzi Griso
Griso, freedom of mind
Powerful yet compact, ready to devour the road, the Griso has all the power of the character from Italian literature after whom it is named. Griso was the muscular bodyguard in the classical Italian novel I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed), Alessandro Manzonis masterpiece set in the country around Mandello del Lario, on the Lecco side of Lake Como. The novel was written in the eighteenth century and set in the sixteenth century.
Introducing Griso, Alessandro Manzoni wrote, Griso was the bravest
of the brave, the masters right hand man to whom all the most dangerous
and difficult missions were entrusted, and totally faithful to the master,
whether for gratitude or interest. This most valiant member of the family
was also living proof of how much the master had achieved in the face of the
powers of the land, and of how his own power had grown, not just in the eyes
of the country folk but in reality as well.
Description:
Technical description.
The impressive spars of the frame embrace the beautifully shaped tank in a
high-tech hug that achieves a perfect balance between visual impact and functionality.
The exhaust collectors criss-cross in an aggressive display of chrome to highlight the unmistakable profile of the 90° V twin, now completely redesigned and equipped with electronic fuel injection. The engine powers the rear wheel through Moto Guzzis robust patented CA.R.C. reactive drive shaft incorporated in the aluminium swingarm.
The chassis components further enhance the Grisos striking beauty and thrilling ride. The robust 43 mm up-side down fork is adjustable in spring preload and in hydraulic compression and rebound damping.
Rising rate linkages coupled to a fully adjustable monoshock damp the rear wheel.
The elegant brakes are powerful too. The front wheel is equipped with two 320 mm floating stainless steel disks and callipers with four opposed pistons. The rear brake features a floating calliper with two parallel pistons. Historical imagery and the latest technology combine to breathe life into a motorcycle with uncompromising personality, designed with a freedom of mind that lets it match the needs and preferences of whoever rides it.
The Griso was born and grew up on typically Italian terrain, on the exhilarating bends of the lakeside roads and the hairpins of the mountains. The Griso has learned to master this terrain and to perform on it with consummate class. It has metabolised every curve, every angle of lean and every straight to guarantee riders the sort of sensitivity and reaction that define the very spirit of motorcycling.
The Griso is a café racer with attitude, a thoroughbred naked, an anti-conformist custom, and a radical muscle bike rolled into one. In short, it is a bike of many souls. The chance to discover them all is just one of the many sides of its irresistible fascination.
The engine: A new age for Guzzis 90° V twin.
One glance is enough to see that the Grisos power unit is brand new.
The alternator has changed place, and is now located between the two cylinders
instead of in line with the crankshaft. The engine is a full 4 cm shorter
and far more compact as a result. Also, because it is installed further forward
and higher than before, the new engine contributes to distinctly superior
overall balance and handling.
The car type alternator produces a generous 650 W of electrical power but only generates current when it is actually needed, thus limiting unnecessary power draw.
Reduced alternating mass.
Virtually every component in the engine has been redesigned or improved.
The crankcase is new; the con-rods are 10% lighter than before; even the ratio
between con-rod length and piston stroke is higher to reduce alternating mass
inertia and vibrations.
The piston too is shorter and lighter and the lighter rings are positioned differently. Even the skirt has a new design and two oil jets now ensure improved lubrication for the gudgeon pin. New metal cylinder head gaskets have replaced the old Klingerite versions for better thermal conduction and stud grip.
Ignition and aspiration
Twin spark ignition ensures superbly stable combustion with smoother power
and less vibration. The result is a significant improvement in comfort and
emission levels well within the limits imposed by the strict new Euro 3 standard.
The valve seats are sintered and no longer in cast iron, and the valves themselves are in stainless steel for extended life and improved thermal and wear resistance.
A stepper motor air valve, also derived from the automobile industry, guarantees easier starting from stationary and also keeps emissions down and engine speed stable. Pico injectors are installed in the intake manifolds as near as possible to the valves for more efficient combustion, more instantaneous response and reduced emissions.
Lubrication
Modifications to the crankcase, oil strainer and sump have greatly improved
lubrication, particularly when the bike is leaned into bends and during fierce
acceleration and braking.
The pressure relief valve has been moved from the end of the lubrication
circuit to the middle, so that excess oil is released from the pumps
suction line, reducing power absorption and completely eliminating the phenomenon
of foaming.
Engine gas flow has been radically improved and blow-by dramatically reduced.
Special attention has also been paid to making maintenance easier. The oil filter is now located the outside the engine for this very purpose.
Reactive drive shaft transmission Patented reliability.
The most significant technical innovation is reactive shaft drive, patented
by Moto Guzzi under the name CA.R.C. (CArdano Reattivo Compatto
- Compact Reactive Shaft Drive). The new patented drive shaft is incorporated
inside the aluminium alloy swingarm. The pinion gear and the drive shaft are
free to oscillate inside the swingarm and the drive shaft is equipped with
two universal joints with built-in torsional dampers for optimum transmission
response.
The main benefit of this original and extremely compact drive system is the elimination of the counter-shaft effect typical of conventional shaft drives. Also, unlike alternative systems, Moto Guzzis patented reactive shaft drive enables a single piece swingarm to be used, improving rigidity. Finally, because the reaction shaft is not load-bearing, it is perfectly reliable in operation.
The new system ensures a consistently smooth ride without the jerks that
conventional shaft drive systems inevitably generate when you open or close
the throttle. The new system maintains all the other advantages of shaft drive
including cleanliness, low noise levels and very low maintenance.
