You could get a KLX, an XR, or maybe a larger TTR. You should be able to find any of those used in the price range you posted. You could even consider a GasGas. Maybe one of their endurocross models. They aren't as common but I think they are great. They really have top quality components and great...

Or by not sucking at throttle and clutch control. Not really. If you read about track racing and their techniques when starting you will find they have to either take off by feathering the clutch or by using the back brake to prevent the front wheel from comming up and losing speed.
