if you're talking the 650 v-star I understand you should be fine. Vulcan 500 too. My first bike (i'm a noob too) is a 750 shadow spirit and I've been loving this bike since I got it in March. I too found the riders course bikes a bit cramped. But they were fine for those first lessons.

I have suspected my speedo was reading a bit faster than i am really going. I don't know how much, but maybe 7-10%.

thanks. the 400 miler will be the last one - coming home. so that's GOOD in that i can get a good rest afterwards. thanks Nibblet. I feel pretty good about it. The entire trip is a route i've taken many times in a car, so I know the roads, and won;t be distracted by reading a map or anything. so that's good.
