It might be your Control module . breaking down when the bike is hot, and then running fine after cooling down a bit is the first sign they are goin bad.
Easiest way to check is if you have a friend with the same bike, switch em out and see what happens. :?

I would agree that your battery is shot, but if you just gotta be sure, yank it out and go to your nearest Auto Parts store where they will test it for you. Probably free of charge

Always sorry to hear about these things Duffy . We all hope your friend heals well and fast Bike's can be replaced but people cant ! Ride like you are invisible, cuz to a LOT of Cagers you are !!
