Re: When were you ready for a 600+CC supersport
+1 to spyder's comments. When you get on a real-deal 600+ cc sportbike, it feels very much like you're learning to ride all over again. Everyone will tell you this, but you won't really understand until you do it yourself.

Re: Beginner Jacket
+1 for the Joe Rocket jackets. I looked at Icon jackets when I was shopping for mine, too, and while they're really awesome looking and super high quality, they are, as you've found out, excessively expensive. You'll be just as safe in one of the Joe Rocket armored jackets, and many of them are real...

He means 600+cc sport bikes. A 1200cc Sportster is a fine starter bike, IMO, so long as the rider is strong enough to handle the size.

Re: My reasoning behind a 250cc being too slow.
If you buy the smaller bike, you can always sell it (easily) a season or year later and probably get back almost what you spent on it. Or you can be like so many other people who buy a 600cc sportbike, subsequently scare the living sh*t out of themselves, and sell it back with ~500 miles on it. Ever...

Re: When were you ready for a 600+CC supersport
I started riding an '05 CBR1000RR after riding a 1981 Honda CM400T for about 3 years. I also spent some time on a Suzuki DRZ400SM during those years. It really is going to vary from person to person, though, and it does have a lot to do with disposition. I treat the bike right. I'm not scared of it,...

My bike is 28 years old and had 5500 miles on it when I got it. It was obvious that the bike had this much mileage, because everything was in near perfect condition. Granted, I got it from a dealership (it was the owner's father's bike) not a person from craigslist. Either way, it is definitely poss...

Seeing vespas and other scooters pop up in my suburban NJ town is pretty frightening. In fact, seeing them in the United States itself is unnerving for me. People might finally be getting the right idea about local transportation, but here in NJ people rent scooters (yes, actual scooters) for 100 do...

Used bikes can be great. Mine is 28 years old and when I bought it it had zero problems, and all of it was stock except for things like tires that had needed to be replaced. To be quite frank, those two bikes you are describing sound like a nightmare. Your experience with motorcycling is not going t...
