OK I thought I was a noob, but at least I knew enough to pull in the clutch and hit the brake before I lost control. But maybe that's because I sat and practiced that before I even lifted my feet of the ground. So far the only thing I have it (touch wood) is a few kamikazi bugs.

Most maintenance on a bike is fairly easy (ei change oil, adjust and lube chain etc) and the book can be followed fairly easily. Can always post specific questions on this site too.
If a class doesn't have hands on training I wouldn't bother with it. Can get the same info from the book.

If your commute entails lots of stop and go traffic the liquid cooled would be a better choice. If not then the air cooled is less maintenance (never would have a coolant leak).
All the above drives have pluses and minuses. Shaft drive is less maintenance but can be costly if something fails. Chain ...
