I agree that the 250 would be a good starter bike, but I also think that after about 6 months you are going to want more of a bike. You sound like you would be a pretty conserative rider, but I still think even with that, you will wish you would have gone with the GS500 over the 250. So my vote, for ...

The Honda CRF 150 is a good starter bike, but the 230 (which took the place of the XR 200) is going to give you quite a bit more power. I will say though...the best bike for just being reliable and getting you where you need to go is the older XR 200s.

I really think the height of the seat breaks the DRZ for ya. BuzZz is right on this, you can always resale the XT and upgrade later if you want.

You could always go the street tire route like on the Suzuki DR-Z 400. I put a link to a picture of one below. I have seen this on Yamaha's and Honda's.
