I went with the BMW F700GS. Love it so far (only 40 very careful miles on the back roads!).

I have ruled out the Versys, as the local Kawasaki dealer was incompetent and completely not helpful (and I see from the reviews I am not alone in this opinion!) Interesting choice! I had not considered it. Thanks for the info. A little concerned about the size/weight for a first bike, but I'll see if I can find one to check out!
