For MY usage: Lots of cool damp weather, with mostly very straight (and usually bumpy) roads. The Yamaha would be the hands down pick of the two. But I suspect either one could get you to the office in disturbingly short order

I'm gonna stick to my strip of limosine tint across the top of a clear faceshield...similar effect to the Nolan helmet shown above. I hope the broken er (modded) shades get the job done for ya though 8)

Personally I think the Vulcan 500 was made as a diabolical plot to convert newbie cruiser fans into sport bike riders...but that's off topic. On the displacement issue, there's been plenty of times when I've noticed my 500's speedo indicating 95-100 mph to keep people from gating me in the fast lane...

I read a post last year by someone who was complaining that a modular helmet used his buddys' face to protect itself. Appearently the thing popped open the instant it contacted the pavement.

38 miles each way is a pretty decent commute, i'd be lookin for something with long legs and at least SOME wind protection for the occasional chilly/wet mornings. FZ6 or kawas Z750s in my humble opinion :D

I was pokin around at a dealer last week and saw a V-strom, since I was just browsing I didn't have the nerve to ask the guy to bring a ladder over so I could try it on. Course, being only 5'6" I spose a lot of bikes look tall to me. Seriously, i prolly could have tippy-toed it :?
