What about solo riding? I want to ride to visit friends in Florida and Texas. Those are trips I would do alone in my car without hesitation, but I'm not so sure about riding the bike. What kind of experiences have y'all had with long distance solo riding?

OK, for the update - after several conversations with both the riding buddy and the BF (who by the way is out of state, so he can't ride with us), I decided to accept the gifts THIS ONE TIME. The guy who gifted me this stuff is strictly a riding buddy, and I have met his wife on several occasions ...

LADIES: Accepting gifts from male bikers?

I ride regularly with a small group - the hard core riders are myself and two other single women in our 40's, and two married guys in their 60's. I've met all spouses and boyfriends. My problem is this - one of the guys the other day presented me with a receipt (with price cut out) for some things ...

By all means, get a backrest! I've been a passenger on bikes with and without, and it makes a HUGE difference. I ride my own bike as well, and it feels downright SCARY to be on the back of a bike without a backrest.

Also, how about taking the MSF class together?

oh man :-) LOL!! the bit about ordering throttle cables after 8000km is quite funny and reminds me how eternal patience is always in great demand when dealing with the public... in general most cables last a VERY long time and it is absolutely normal for someone to ask why you would want any part ...

Of all the responses, I go with sapaul. The answers to the poll seemed rather sexist, IMHO. Women are getting more involved with biking, and I know there are men out there who really do want to have their women friends riding with them. I would never want to have my boyfriend be a passenger, simply ...

There seems to be quite a bit of women's gear on the internet, and my feeling is that as more of us get involved in biking, manufacturers will respond. Even in the design of bikes - eventually they will bring the seats down and the handlebars closer. It's a pain to order over the internet and not ...

damn, by the time I found this thread, Newsweek had taken it off their page. What did this person do? I'm TOTALLY curious, from the tone of your replies!

Just to let you know, I'm 5'3", 140 lbs, and I ride a Honda Shadow VLX, which is a 600cc bike, and I can put both feet flat on the ground. Honda cruisers have some of the lowest seats around - I think mine is a bit over 25 inches. If they have Rebels at the MSF class, I think your mom would do fine ...

An update. I called the place where I bought my bike to schedule the 8000 mile service. First, the guy says, "let me see if we have a tech in that day." WHAT???? Then I tell him that I want to replace my throttle cables, and he says, "what makes you think you need to replace your throttle cables?" I ...
