Thanks, I didn't know KKB did motorcycles. Now I feel a little sheepish

I don't know if it makes a difference but there is about 15,000 miles on it. Once I inform my buddy of what he should ask I post it for sale on this forum.

Thanks

I went with $400 because there is still some work that needs to be done to get it fine tuned.

Hey there! I got a 1983 Yamaha xs400k about a year ago. It had been sitting at my brother's uncle in-law's house. I was told he had it running recently but it needs some work. I was told I could have it if I wanted it. So I took it. Turns out it hadn't run for 9 years . At that point I though...

well initially I replaced them. Not so much because I needed to but because I could . Well when gas started to pour out of my bike I thought I should go back to the way it was. When I knew the floats were properly adjusted. I did notice that the rubber intake tubes aren't so plyable and I c...

flows like milk and honey...oh wait its gas!

Hey I got gas leaking back through my airfilter. I thought that it might be poorly adjusted floats on my 1983 Yamaha 400xs. I had bought a set of carbs from a junk yard and replaced any part that was in better condition that what I now had. This included the floats. So I put the old ones back fully ...

well invest about $10 for a multimeter from radio shack, so you can measure voltage, resistance and current (the current option isnt useful for bikes, coz the meter only measures in milliamps). Now you can verify if your coils are alright. A junkyard might still have a bike with good coils. Chekck ...

Thanks, it appears as though the coils are in the spine. They look a little tricky to get to. I have seen replacements on-line but they are $90 per. And if the deteriorate then I am not sure a junk yard would be a good choice. The last time I pulled the plugs to check for spark there was no visible ...

Hey there, I have a 1983 Yamaha xs400k. I got the bike in October and have been working on it off and on ever since. When I got the bike it had been sitting for 9 years under a tarp outside. I can only imagine some of the issues that still may be lurking. I have made huge asthetic improvements and s...

This same problem started with my 82 Seca. No one could tell me what was wrong. Tried everything -- carbs cleaned, plugs were fine, all of it. It just never recovered. I was happy to get rid of it. not great news but the earlier I find out the better. I suspect its electrical but I don't know enoug...

I had the carbs cleaned and syncronized at a shop about a month ago. At the time they replaced an in line fuel filter. They also replaced the spark plugs at that time. It was at that time that put some gas in the tank so maybe its already old. At the time it doesn't seem like I am getting consistent...

timing off?

Hey my 1983 Yamaha maxim xs400 backfires a lot and won't quite turn over. It will run for a little but at about 500 RPMs and then eventually die. I can do this repetedly until the battery dies. I just can't seem to get it above 1000 RPMs.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you will be fine once you change the fuse.

Having worked at a battery warehouse I have seen where compeletly drained batteries were hooked up incorrectly and the polarity's have been reversed. Since the fuse blew you had some charge left in the battery before it was hooked up.

I have a half helmet but its a backup. I will wear it around the neighborhood if I am just test driving or trying to work out some kinks but other than that its always a full helment.

no offense jack but I think that you are better off taking it to a shop. If you don't know what a carb looks like then it would be hard for anyone, not standing over your shoulder, to tell you how to clean it, take it apart, put it back together and everything that you will be looking at. On another...

sounds like a bad cell in a battery to me, it makes it so the battery won't hold a charge. since he can charge it, start it, and then a few hours later it won't start. I would think since the motorcycle hasn't been running THIS problem isn't with the alternator. That doesn't mean other problems don'...

I'll add it to my list of things I'm currently looking for on ebay. If the list gets much longer I may just be looking for a buyer off ebay. Then I'll use the money for a bike that doesn't have an "ebay list"

thanks for the help.
