Re: Helmets, you need to know this

Centerstand65, if I understand you right, you prefer to wear old, used helmets? Do you know anything about the history of these helmets? And can I ask HOW old? I assume you're aware the expanded polystyrene layer inside a helmet's shell stops being effective crash protection for your brain after abo...

Re: Cruiser for a Returning User

I also have long been in love with the look of the Suzuki Intruder 700, 750 and 800 from the 90's. Almost bought one of these instead of my Shadow. Either of you have any experience / thoughts on either of these options? Ditto Jack, apologies for the delayed response. I never rode an Intruder 800, ...

Good for you, glad somebody is riding. Not a lot of motorcycling going on here in New Jersey in January! :(

Re: Cruiser for a Returning User

I agree with Jack on the Shadow 1100 suggestion. Shadow 1100's from the early 2000's are one of the best deals in used bikes going at the moment, IMO. Dirt cheap - my stepdaughter picked one up in 2016 for $500, that "wasn't running" according to the buyer. After charging the battery, and putting ga...

Re: Catalytic Converter

Apparently different areas got the catalytic converter model in different years. You'd think it would be easy to find an authoritative reference on the internet, but I searched for awhile in vain. If you compare pictures of an earlier V Star 650 and a later one, you'll notice the pipes with the cat ...

Re: What did you do today...

Well not today, actually on Friday two days ago..... picked up a used 2013 Kawasaki KLX250S to begin doing some off-pavement riding. KLX250S 11022018.jpg It's the other half of a pair with my wife's new 2018 Yamaha XT250 we purchased in September. Long-time forum members might remember I had a 2005 ...

Re: Tips on keeping balance on a bike

Kind of hard to answer this in general, but are you keeping your eyes up? Don't look down, especially when <5mph. Find an object in the medium distance that's basically aligned with the direction you're intending to go, and fix your eyes on that. The old "you go where you look" maxim works for the v...

Re: Strange question about foot pegs....

I can only guess: maybe it's there to keep the inside of your right foot from being in contact with that protrusion on the right side engine casing? If that's true, it kind of looks like an engineering afterthought by Honda.

Re: Gear

I read some reviews of Siima products, they generally seem positive. You're not getting Klim or Rukka or Aerostich quality, you're paying a medium price and getting medium-high quality goods. On that basis, it seems like a good bargain. Is medium-high quality in protective gear good enough for you? ...

Re: Helmet advice

You should go to a shop, try on the helmet you're considering. Wear it around the shop for at least 20 minutes, see if any pressure points develop. My wife once had to give away a fairly pricey Nolan that felt OK when worn for 5 minutes..... but would develop pressure points if worn longer.

Re: NADA vs. KBB?

Wow, necro-thread!! But the question is still relevant. I don't find either service particularly accurate. I have a bike that's been for sale for awhile, at a price significantly below KBB's estimate, and well.... it's still here in my garage. Things are worth what someone is willing to pay you for ...

I know you’re retiring the cool wall with the extravaganza of the best of the best. I have a suggestion. Worst of the worst. Vote on the bottom of the pile. Bottom 3? Interesting idea! Although it may not get me much love from the manufacturers who are in the bottom 3! :| Mike I think every manufac...

Re: The Blog of Blues

The local Yamaha Power Sports dealer here had a red BMW 650 show up from a trade. Assuming it was one of the GS models, just out of curiosity, was it the single cylinder (which really is a 650), or one of the twins (which are called 650, but really are de-tuned 800's)? Mrs. Stark has one of the lat...

The Bonneville is a motorcycle. The Goldwing is......... half of a Civic? Bonneville wins for me, it's not even close.

What kind(s) of riding do you do most often? Commuting first, medium-distance pleasure rides second, also so some long distance touring in the summer. What are your biggest problems/pet peeves while riding? Car drivers. How do you feel about advanced safety technologies? Do you mean applying this s...

Honda wins again for me. I've always wondered how something that weighs 690 lbs can be considered a sport -tourer. Makes no sense to me. Battle tank, yes; sport-tourer...... nope. And it has linked brakes!!! :humm: :disgust:  Really, Kawasaki??? It's not a scooter, fer cryin' out loud!! So not...
