Re: Any benefit from mid or high-grade octane?

My '09 Harley SuperGlide wants the high-grade stuff, 91 or better. Since I'm usually fueling my wife's Suzuki S50 first, it gets the high-test as well. Never noticed a difference btw 87 and 91+ in performance on the 'Zook, which is graded for 87 or better. But the one time I've had to use 87 octane ...

Re: How many really do?

I do. Every spring, I read David Haugh's "Proficient Motorcycling" and find a deserted parking lot to go thru the MSF test. I fail miserably the first time, especially the dreaded "box." I keep working on it, and after a month or two of once-a-week-practices, I get pretty good. Wish me luck on my fi...

My friend - The sad statistics should remind us all:
* Paranoia is your friend. Expect the unexpected
* When entering an intersection, a couple of taps on the horn is a good idea
* For God's sake -- no, for your childrens' sake -- wear a damn helmet.

Re: Thank goodness it was a skinny car.

Storysununfolding - My wife is riding my S50 nowadays. I'd like to get a louder horn for her bike - suggestions welcome, esp. ones that are easy to install! Appreciate any advice you can give us.

Re: U-turns on an incline/hill

The one time I've ever dropped my bike was attempting to make a U-turn on a hill on a wrong turn halfway up a semi-paved *cliff* in Kentucky, yes I was an idiot. 25 yards farther up the hill and I'd have hit a nice flat, wide parking lot in which to turn around. Instead, I tried to hold up an 825-lb...

Re: The riding season is arriving- are you ready?

Got the bike out last Saturday for the first time - got above 45 degrees and I was antsy (Chicago area). Took the Harley for a short spin through the backstreets just to get reaquainted and then yeah, hit the local elementary school parking lot to run through the figure-8s and low-speed maneuvers fr...

Re: Thank goodness it was a skinny car.

I used to ride a Suzuki S50, a midsize bike with the standard Japanese horn: wheeeenk . First time I fired up the horn on the Harley - same sort of scenario - I seriously damn near fell off the bike. There was the FOGHORN BLAST of noise and a buzzing vibration on my left calf that startled the livin...

Just tried it with my Superglide in the front yard ... nope, landed upside down!

OK, just kidding, I'll have to wait until spring when the snow melts and I can get the bike out of the shed.

Final report: We rented a 1200 (me) and an 883 (her) and were most impressed. For example, I cranked the bike down Rt. 83 and opened her up and could not find the top end in the two miles before I had to slow down for the stop light at North Ave. Most impressive. The missus loved the 883, except the...

Just went from a Zook Intruder 800 to a Harley Superglide Custom. The H-D vibrates like a concrete compactor, is mucho expensive and the company is always grubbing for even more of your money (harley credit cards, special harley bug dissolving juice or your chrome will dissolve, harley special motor...

Thanks everyone! Appreciate the input. I plan to rent the 1200 on Friday and take her for a day-long spin. If rubber-mounted Milwaukee iron & the trade-in don't win me over, I'll head 15 minutes up the road and buy the Honda.

Thanks all! Appreciate the insight. I'm looking at new bikes here. I've been leaning toward the Sporty, yes, mainly because when I threw a leg over it, there was almost an audible "click" as I snapped into place. It felt like home. HD also has a 2-year warranty, vs the VTX's one, for what that's wor...

Spend as much on the helmet as you think your head is worth. As my MSF instructor said: "If your brain is worth $50, get a $50 helmet." Mine is worth $310, a Nolan modular. Haven't regretted the purchase price for a moment. When you come right down to the basics, all you really have is your brain an...

Wasn't on a motorcycle, but last night saw a jogger with reflective tape all over her suit - pitch dark, but I saw her getting ready to cross a side street where I was going to make a left turn. Without the tape, I wouldn't have seen her until ... I hope! ... just before I made the turn, under the s...

modular brain buckets

Wife and I both have Nolan modular helmets. We both wear glasses (not big old-folks trifocal windshields, I hasten to add), so full-face helmets are a problem for us. The modular helmets snap down around the glasses and give us a convenient way to make sure we're as protected as possible. I can't im...

Sportster 1200C vs. Honda VTX 1300

Folks, I'm hoping I can get some relatively unbiased opinions here. I've narrowed my search down to the HD Sportster 1200 Custom and the Honda VTX 1300. The price points are pretty much identical. I'm a more comfy on the HD, but the Honda promises a smoother ride and (by reputation) better reliabili...
