Very helpful post! I would like to add anyway buy a NEW unused motorcycle helmet with DOT (or better) rating. Do not buy a used or unknown helmet as this is your life you are entrusting to that piece of safety gear. I would also strongly recommend a FULL FACE helmet over ALL other types. I had a hi...

This is where using a full service shop is worth it. They should encourage you to wear the helmet for some time before buying. So far, we have been to two shops trying on helmets. Neither one offered any of your valuable advice :?. At one shop we were quickly handed of to the "kid" when i...

Started on the street, 1979 Honda CB750F black/oranage. In retrospect I should have started on something a bit smaller but the 750 was a nice bike and I had it for a long time. I was lucky and never had any serious mishaps just cosmetic ones. I instruct on a CSC course now and I find that people tha...

I've been riding for about 26 years and recently noticed that I couldn't hear my alarm clock with my left ear. I went to an audologist for a hearing test and found that I'd lost about 35db hearing in my left ear and a somewhat lessor amout in my right. The audiologist suggested it was probably noise...

I ride to work 5 days a week. The rest of the time I ride whenever I have to go somewhere, when I want to go somewhere and sometimes I just ride. In Ottawa conditions usually allow me to do this from March to December. Traffic, weather, city, country doesn’t really matter; all environments are an op...

There has been a very long discussion in the BMW touring formum on this subject and if HD has finally been awarded the contract I guess that's the way it will be. Sounds like at least they had to work for it and the contract wasn't just handed to them because they're a domestic company. I never deve...

Nothing wrong with a mixed fleet. It allows organizations to try out different technology and promotes competition. It also exposes the general public to different versions of authority motorcycles.

You are most likely to injure yourself in your first season and no amount of gear can protect you in the worst crashes. Some have suggested that wearing full protective gear, including helmets gives riders a false sense of security. No gear gives you no security and even the best riders occasionally...

Sometimes in late December usually have the bike out again by early March. Might be a few days during the midwinter thaw we get in Ottawa around early Feb. Unfortunately the bike is tucked in at that time and its not worth it to get it ready to ride for only a few days. Not much to riding in the col...

In North America the four most commonly used brands for police services are Harley Davidson, Kawasaki, BMW and Honda. The Kawasaki 1000 is being phased out as the company stopped production on that model. Most services that used Kawasaki are switching to the Honda ST1300-P or BMW R1200RT-P. HD does ...
