Ahh, I see. I just need to keep your girlfriend with me in case I need to make that maneuver...

U-turns on an incline/hill

I heard that the Alameda County Sheriff advanced rider course has an exercise where students need to make u-turns on an incline. I'm very comfortable with u-turns on flat pavement, but that exercise sounds really tough. Any tips? I assume the normal u-turn tactics still work: * use the clutch fricti...

checked tire pressure today--spared my life?

Before I rode to work this morning, I decided to check tire pressures just for kicks. They both looked fully inflated, but I read somewhere that checking often is a good habit. The rear tire is supposed to have a pressure of 36psi. It was 10psi. I thouht the gauge was broken, so I used the backup pe...

I'm relieved to hear that I'm not insane for even considering the maneuver. I think I will practice launching into a turn whenever I happen to be first in line at a left-turn-only lane. After I get comfortable with that I will start sharing left-turn-only lanes. It took me about a year before I felt...

There is a small movement to rename the behavior from lane-splitting or white-lining to lane-sharing. See http://www.laneshare.com/content/view/29/40/.

I won't do it... for now. But it's good to know that one can get comfortable executing that maneuver. Knowing that, I can strive for it.

Sunnyvale. I thought that was in my profile, but I guess not. I'll update it.

Lane-sharing in double left-turn-only lanes

I don't want to get into a discussion about whether lane sharing is okay or not; there are other threads for that. I just want to ask the people who do: "Do you lane share to go to the front of a two-lane-left-turn-only section of a stoplighted intersection?" It gets a bit tricky when it's...

Today I tried revving the engine while the clutch was pulled all the way in. It felt a bit more stable than rolling at idle, but it could be my imagination. I can't really tell. So I guess for me it's inconclusive whether the gyroscopic effect from the engine parts were what makes the bike more stab...

My understanding is its gyroscopics in the engine, helping to keep you upright... This is also the exact slow control method we are taught in the UK, for maneuvers I just thought up of a good way to test this theory. While slowly rolling to a stop, pull the clutch all the way in, and increase the r...
