Thanks for sharing your experiences, GT. As a newbie, the ABS appeals to me too, as does the aftermarket aspect. Did you buy your F650 new or used? I bought it used. New, the price diff between the F650 and Japanese equivalents is kinda ridiculous, but between a bunch of 2-3 year old bikes, the bee...

I know the feeling. My first ride on a motorcycle was about three months ago, even smaller than the bike you rode (about 50cc), and it was still pretty terrifying. It really helped that I was in an MSF class at the time though. A controlled environment and armor all over does wonders for one's confi...

My bike's a single, so I don't see much point in an aftermarket pipe (just makes a crap sound even louder). And I use earplugs on every ride to begin with because wind roar makes it so procreating hard to concentrate, so loud pipes would just negate the plugs. Might reconsider though if i had a nice...

Hmmm, I'm really surprised commuting isn't one of the choices. Anyway, maybe 80% of my riding time is spent going to/from work, with an occasional 100-150 mile "joyride" thrown in (still a noob, hope to do longer rides once I'm up for it). If i need to go to the store or the mall, something like tha...

Grey Thumper: I too have been lurking on www.f650.com for several weeks. But I'd really appreciate reading your opinions of the 650 as a first bike, regardless of whether it's new or used. I don't plan to blaze new trails with whatever I buy; total urban riding for me... Well, my opinion would be p...

Like most people here, I prefer freeways for reasons others have already stated. I've noticed though that when traffic is fairly light, cars on freeways tend to sort of "clump together" in batches, and it feels much safer to travel in between the clumps. I don't know if conditions where you live are...

Major, major thanks to everyone who'se responded so far! Not to suck up or anything, but I am really glad I joined this forum. Boatloads of useful info, without all the squidly, competitive BS that I've seen in other forums. Anyway, riding with a big group sounds phenomenally complex and maybe I'll ...

I'm all for high visibility colors. As a noob, I think every little bit helps, and it essentially takes no effort. I've got a bright yellow helmet, but a matching jacket is obviously overkill (although i do wear a reflective vest at night). I don't really like the traditional all-black "biker look" ...

Your bike is very attractive. I have never seen one like that.
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Re: blue2cruise's quote, well, the model was pretty much a sales failure and was discontinued, so i guess there aren't many around. Used, they're quite a good value :)

There's also an F650 forum out there somewere too - don't remember the name offhand. Check out the Chain Gang http://www.f650.com/ Lots of useful info. I lurked there a lot before i got my F 650 CS (search function sucks though). The GS has been around a few years, a used one might be better value ...

When to join a group ride?

Is there a rule of thumb for how much experience you should have before riding with a group? I've been riding for around two months, mainly on the freeways to/from work. I'll give it maybe another month before I try a bit of canyon carving. I'm perfectly happy to ride alone, at my own pace. But I fi...

Hello from the Philippines

Been riding for about two months, been looking for a nice friendly motorcyle forum for longer, and stumbled onto you fine folks ;-P Anyway, I'm from Manila, and I ride a grey BMW F650 CS (hence my sig). http://i15.tinypic.com/2e3v4v4.jpg It isn't big, it isn't fast, but it punches above it's weight,...
