Re: This Week: 2017 Yamaha 04GEN Design Concept

Buell did the whole "translucent plastic" thing over ten years ago, on a bike that was actually cool (awesome, even).

This Yamaha, well, I'd be embarrassed to be on one.

Re: This Week: 2017 Dodge Tomahawk Viper V10 SRT GTS

I prefer concept bikes to be actual game changers, bikes that may not necessarily be practical, but that set an ambitious goal (whether it's design or engineering) that can, even in theory, trickle down to a production bike. Even as a concept, the Tomahawk is a fail. Four leaning wheels is actually ...

Indeed. I wouldn't call it uncool outright. I just can't see a single thing that's interesting about it.

The bike itself is cool enough, but teaching your kids to ride (or heck, to do anything riskier than staying in the house playing videogames) is awesome!

Re: This Week: 2016 Aprilia RSV4 R-FW

It's a fast Italian superbike, so it at least deserves a solid cool. It feels like a bit of a last hurrah for a fairly old design though. This is basically the ultimate version of a bike that was first launched in the previous decade.

I just saw one of these on the road this morning. Solid cool. After all, is there a more desirable-looking 400cc street bike out there?

I liked the Scout and I like this bike. But agree, I wish it had more cornering clearance and suspension travel. Twin disks would be great too. Anything that makes it turn and stop better, basically.

Re: This Week: 2016 BMW G310R

I think it's a fantastic idea. KTM did a great job launching their 200cc and 390cc Dukes, ending up getting a lot of new riders into the brand, and they're now the largest European motorcycle manufacturer. A decade ago, the average BMW rider was in their late 50s, and pretty much every move they've ...

Re: Should the cool wall have a Meh option?

I actually like the challenge of having to choose whether a bike is kinda cool or kinda uncool. Otherwise it'd be too easy to pick Meh most of the time.

Re: Most Important Gear??

Bee, june bug, any large flying insect. You'd be surprised what they feel like at 60mph. The impact will raise a welt on unprotected skin. And there's small objects kicked up by cars like stones, etc. +1 "Dress for the crash" does have a point, but all this stuff also protects you in everyday ridin...

Re: This Week: 2016 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S

Awesome. I've always loved the Dynas. I'm no Harley expert, but IIRC, the Dyna line was the first H-D line with rubber mounted engines, tachometers built into the tanks, and the first non-touring Harleys with twin front disks. Lot of really functional, well-engineered details. I especially like the ...

Re: 2016 Ducati XDiavel - Coolness Factor = 59.8%

At first I thought this bike was fairly meh, but now that Hanson posted the old Diavel, I do think the new one looks much better; the deletion of those weird plasticky shrouds on the old DIavel exposes more of the frame and fork of the newer bike, and makes it look more "normal" (well, relatively). ...

Suzuki DR650? Although it's more of a dual sport than an ADV bike, and max load is likely to be under 500lbs. Heck, the official max load of a BMW GS Adventure is, IIRC, around 420lbs

Re: This Week: 2016 Honda Bulldog Concept - Vote Now

As a shortie, I appreciate an off pavement bike that doesn't have a stratospherically high seat height, but 730mm (and the accompanying lack of ground clearance) is a bit ridiculous. Aside from severely limiting the practicality of this bike, the low to the ground stance just completely clashes with...

Re: This Week: 2016 Zero DSR - Vote Now

Come to think of it, why do most e-bike manufacturers seem to concentrate on mimicking the look (and maybe even the performance) of sporty bikes (either faired sportbikes or naked bikes). Why not concentrate R&D on e-scooters? (Like an e-Vespa). Performance and range will be less of an issue with a ...

Looks like there's a formula to a cool bike. Tick as many boxes as possible: wire wheels, a round headlight, classic styling, a standard riding position, and as much as possible, be a Guzzi.

Re: what do you think?

I don't hate them, but they combine the disadvantages of a bike with the disadvantages of a car, with none of the advantages of either. If I wanted the wind in your hair feeling but was unable to operate a two-wheeler, I'd rather just accept that fact and get a roadster like a Miata.
