Re: How fast did you break in a motorcycle?

Does she even like riding? It's a serious question. I had 100 miles on the odometer in the first 2 hours I owned my bike, and logged about 700mi/month ever since.

Help her find some ladies riding groups. Show her some nice, country roads and take her out for lunch.

Moar training is moar better.

One of these days, I'll get around to taking the extra MSF classes.

Re: gift for a woman

I like the massage idea. Offer to detail her bike? (provided you do it right. You know we can be fussy about these things) I usually buy whatever bike related thing that I want, when I want to, so I'm not much help. For what it's worth, I make a lot of silver jewelry that plays well with motorcycle ...

I just slow down until I can see enough of where the road goes. Beats pulling off onto a soft shoulder and dumping into a cactus :)

Re: Nervous on open highways

Keeping your knees snug to the bike, for me, helps with control. I can darn near steer the thing with my butt on a brand new set of tires. As for your bike (I have the same, one year older), it handles excessive highway speeds like a champ. I've ridden it through some of the worst traffic you can im...

Re: Do you ride in the rain? At night?

Ain't nothing like riding in bad weather. Bring our your best profanity and have a ball! I'll ride in anything that won't stick to the road and turn into ice. Been through some pretty vicious microbursts - hail, wind shear, lightning so close I could taste it, the works. I don't seek these things ou...

Re: New Rider Experience

My bike looks like holy hell, so I'm making him ride it for a year to get the hang of things (and to get those first two or three dumps out of the way) before we buy him something pretty and shiny. I am an awesome wife :)

Re: Alaska here we come

I grew up in Alaska and went back for a visit this last August. You're in for a treat. I hear the entire AlCan is entirely paved as of a couple of years ago. There's a publication called Milepost Magazine for it, too. Get one. It'll show you where all the gas stations are (and help you locate the on...

Re: New Rider Experience

Congratulations! You got the first dump out of the way. Only one or two more to go :) My husband dumped mine for the first time last week while stopped on the side of the road. Called me all freaked out. Cutest thing ever.

Enjoy the ride!

Re: helmet when your out

I find that folks don't mess with motorcycle gear. I had a pair of sunglasses taken from my helmet, once, but that was it. I hang the helmet off of one handlebar and stuff my jacket and gloves in the saddlebag. Since you're on a sport bike, I doubt saddle-bags are on the menu :) You could get one of...

Re: Why I ride

I loved riding out to the mountains when I lived in Norfolk. It's how I'd get my fall color fix :) And the Jamestown-Scotland ferry was, by far, the best way to cross the James River (not to mention a stop at the Surry House for those amazing fries).

If they're heavy duty, cover your ankles, and make your feet happy you're good.

Re: first motorcycle trip ever

If you're heading as far as Philly, I had a nice ride south out of there on US 301 (some really great bridges along the way). Then, pick up something heading west to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Several good roads to choose from about the level of Richmond. Then, from the Blue Ridge, take a detour to US ...

Oh, no!

And I was hoping to make one of these mine when my Shadow finally craps out, so long as it fits. Sexy little bikes for short people are so hard to find.

Why not get your endorsement by passing the MSF class? Quick, easy, and totally worth whatever you have to pay for the class.

Re: Air cooled VS Water cooled

I once had to pull off the highway to wait for my ex-boyfriend's Harley to cool off after overheating during rush hour on I-64 in Hampton Roads. My liquid cooled Honda never gave me that problem. The cooling system has behaved itself remarkably well over the last 9 years and 75k miles.

Well, crud. I'm only 2000 miles into the last oil change, and I never did pay any mind as to what they're feeding her. Any adjustments are going to have to wait. It's snowing in southern Arizona right this minute :/

Gear slips when accelerating

A couple of times, in the past week, I've felt something slip when accelerating hard. 3rd gear, I think. And it does slip from 2nd to neutral if I get a little throttle happy. Did a little googling and there seems to be a few options: 1. worn out clutch plates (first thing I thought of, and the most...
