I can't wait!!

Hello out there. I signed up awhile ago but never got the chance to really go on so now I'm introducing myself. I got interested in motorcycles a couple of years ago and since just been DYING to learn to ride. But alas, I am only 14 and so cannot. Whats more, i dont even have any family members or close friends with one. So I've never even been a passenger. It's really frustrating to wait. Mostly I've been reading a lot about them but, you know, it's not the same.

I was looking at this book that suggested certain models for beginners and I noticed there were no harleys listed. I'm curious: are there any harleys
out there that might be good for me as a beginner for when I come of age?

by the way, i'm really small and short(4-11) and probably wont get much bigger because of hereditary stuff so i'd need a small bike. Plus i was looking for a standard or dual sport..........

It's tough being too young when you want something so bad. Be patient, save your money, read the books out there about motorcycling and 2 years will be here before you know it.

Are you anywhere near a place where you can go dirtbiking?

When the time comes to learn to ride on the steet, you might find a Honda Rebel 250cc might be good for you. It makes a great first bike and keep in mind you can always upgrade later when you become more proficient.

If you can't dirtbike, then I suggest you bicycle....it is good for learning balance....plus it helps keep you fit.

Nice to meet you, I'm fifteen and can't wait for my 1st bike either! Except I've been riding dirt since i got a PW 50 back when I was about 5...now I ride a WR 250. Still can't decide what I'd like for a first street bike either...either a DR-Z400SM or a ZZR600...
+1 to the dirtbiking idea...It's a lot of fun, may satisfy your desire for a street motorcycle until you can legally ride one on the street, and it helps you learn basic braking, clutch control, and throttle control.
Finally, where are you located? If you live in SoCal maybe we can go riding sometime in a few years :D

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah I have looked into dirtbiking before and it turns out the closest track is like an hour and a half away. Around where I live it's illegal to ride on most prperty cause it's owned by the state or something. However, there's a pretty large place behind my house that would be good for riding and about half the teens in my neighborhood ride bikes and atvs back there soooo. Of course then comes the money factor. I've been trying to get a job but nowhere hires 14 year olds around here really so i have to wait till may to even have a chance of getting hired. And as much as I would love to go riding with in a few years bob, I live all the way on the east coast in Md. Aah, fate is so cruel!

I checked out the Rebel a little and it seems like a nice bike. Thanks for the suggestion! :D

You will have to become an entrepeneur. :)

Hire yourself out for dogwalking, snow shovelling, lawn mowing, etc., etc.

Ask your parents if they odd jobs that they can hire you to do. Depending on how your folks feels about the idea of a motorbike, they might pay you to do some odd jobs if they know that you are saving for a bike.
Or, they may say, NO! NEVER!
How do your parents feel about it?

My mom doesn't really care about me wanting to get a bike and my stepdad is trying to discourage me but he wont stop me from getting one. Anyway, money's a bit tight right now for them so I don't want to bother them for it.

I have about $200 dollars saved up right now. It was $450 but a lot of expensive things came up lately. So I'll work on the money thing untill I can legally get hired in 5 months.

It sounds like you will eventually get what you want. You just have to be patient.
In the meantime, there are books you can read. Give yourself a headstart on road knowledge, too, for example.

Go to your motor vehicle office and pick up a driving guide. It will have the rules and regulations of the road.

Then perhaps go to your library and see if they have a copy of Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough.

Best of luck in your endeavours to save $$$.

This is so true. I cycled for 15 years mostly 4 times a week all year long, commuting, mountain biking. I feel like I can get on almost any bike now because of it. Plus, if you're gonna end up on a sportsbike and wear some leathers, you may as well be a fit dude too.

One more thing, in hindsight on my part, would be to TAKE LESSONS as soon as you can. Spend the money, hire the bike, and GO WITH AN INSTRUCTOR. I'm not familiar with MSF that everybody talks about, but doing a course with proper equipment and a teacher who loves bikes will set you up for years and years, not just a passing fancy. I didn't have a parent who rode either, and did not know what to do. SPEND THE MONEY AND TAKE THE COURSE.
