Motorcycles gear up for toy run
Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - Ozarks Newsstand - zwire.com

Dallas County Toys for Tots is really going strong according to the organizers. They are looking forward to the 7th Annual Motorcycle Toy Run, and report they have already emptied the overflowing toy barrels at Dollar General and National TV Rental once and expect to do so again.

The Toy Run is 1 p.m. Sunday, and if the weather stays as predicted, Buffalo could have anywhere from 100 to 150 motorcycles roaring through the square carrying toys for Dallas County kids. The community is invited to be on the square to wave as they roar through. The riders will be headed for the Disabled American Veterans on north Mo. 73 to deposit their toys and enjoy gourmet chili and homemade desserts. Two inflatable Santas, one on a bike, will greet them.

The Dollar General store partners with the Marines in their Toys for Tots program, and the Marines, in turn, partner with DCTT. At the National TV Rental store on the east side of the square, the employees there are giving away an HP digital camera and printer in a drawing that is generating toy donations.

At the OACAC Neighborhood Center, Supervisor Judy Hargis reports that appointments to register for the program have slowed down seriously. She urges parents that need this help to call (417) 345-7964 now and make their appointments. She reminds, "First to register, first to shop."

In spite of the toys generated by the toy run and the barrels, there is still much need.

The final distribution, when parents shop for their children, will start at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Volunteers who want to help at the toy run should call Rosie Troutman at (417) 345-2080. Those wanting to help with the shopping on Dec. 5, please call Shawn and Lisle Berry at (417) 345-4165. To help at the setup and distribution, please call Jennifer Berry at (417) 345-7785.

Cooks who plan on bringing some cookies, brownies, etc. to the Motorcycle Toy Run, please call Rosie Troutman, and leave a name and number, and a message if necessary.
