Bio-ethanol Fuel UK motorcycle race series to launch in 2007
Friday, November 17, 2006 - Autoindustry - autoindustry.co.uk

The Auto-Cycle Union (ACU), the governing body of UK motorcycle sport has given its backing to a new dirt track race series that will run exclusively on bio-ethanol fuel starting in 2007.

The all new Junior Short Track Cup will be contested by new CCM 230cc four stroke purpose built Short Track bikes running on Dunlop control tyres and using E85 bio-ethanol fuel.

Jim Parker, chairman of the ACU, said, "As a user of a finite resource, motorcycle sport has a part to play in ensuring that the next generation of bike racers have a sport to enjoy.

"This new exciting project is a major step forward for motorcycle sport and will see motorcycling take the lead in the race for environmentally friendly and sustainable motorsport in the UK and beyond. The ACU is very conscious of the environmental pressures that threaten the future of our sport and see this project as significant step towards addressing those issues."

Gary Harthern, managing director of CCM, said, "CCM recognised the potential of the bio-fuels for racing as soon as the ACU approached us about the idea.

"The actions of the sport today will dictate the shape of the sport tomorrow and CCM are anxious that we contribute to a sport that is viable and successful in to the future.”

The Junior Short Track Cup will run within the established Short Track UK Championship and the seven round championship will be open to all 12 to 15 year olds.

The ACU is also supporting a second bio-fuel project, in association with Coventry University and MX World, Rugby who will enter a bio-ethanol Honda CRF250 in the 2007 MX2 British Motocross Championship competing against conventionally fuelled bikes.
