More than 4,000 bikers ride Toy Run
Thursday, November 23, 2006 - By GARY HERRON/OBSERVER STAFF REPORTER - observer-online.com

You probably couldn't find more chrome and black leather anywhere outside of Rio Rancho on Sunday, as the 14th annual Toy Run was held.

According to "Peachz," one of the event's organizers, there were 4,892 motorcyclists participating, plus 22 cars. There were a few other motorcyclists that didn't participate in the 30-mile run, but instead headed to the Italian-American Association facility, where the day's other events, including a live band and plenty of food and friendship, were held.

"We collected toys and food that filled up a 14-foot and a 28-foot truck from the

floor two-thirds of the way up," she said, happy again with the benevolent motorcyclists.

Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety motorcycle officers led the way, departing Rio Rancho High School at about 11:30 a.m. The ride went up Broadmoor to Northern, headed north on Unser to US 550 and then south on NM 528 to NM 448, wound through Corrales to Loma Larga Road, and then headed up Meadowlark Lane to Geraldine, ending at the Italian-American Association.

The event ran smoothly, with countless motorists and residents pausing to wave to riders in the procession.

"It was fantastic to work with DPS to do something so good for the public," said Paul Caputo of the Sandoval County Sheriff's Department. "Cooperation was perfect (and) enhanced the event."
