2002 voyager won't shift up

hi I am new to your form I took my bike in to get tuned up carbs cleaned rode it home about 16 miles then two weeks later went to go for a ride and it would only shift into first and nuteral it won't shift up how should I go about trying to find the problem where do I start do I tear down the clutch side if so what do I look for any help would be great ps the bike only has 19000 mile on it and the last ride it shifted great

Howdy and welcome to the forum. What I would do is (with the bike in neutral) place the bike on the centerstand, then try putting the bike in second gear (lift up). Look at the gear change lever. Do any of the parts look like they're bent? Then try third. Good luck and let us know what you find.

I tried that it feels like it hit a wall but it travels all the as I watched the linkage move it just don't go into gear

I have a 87 voyager doing the same thing.I just bought it for a good price.Thought I was getting a deal,that it only needed a starter.Found out it needed a starter clutch.Tore down the whole bike,replaced the starter clutch.Now it runs great,but won't shift up.Does exactly as you described.If you figure out what is the problem,please post on here.I am desperately in need of a good long mind clearing ride.

I will have to wait until I my clutch side cover gasket and put the bike back together and try what wrider says hope it works

wrider idea's worked my bike shifts now just changed the oil took it out and tried it thanks for the idea
