Electronic Ignition Kits

#1 Unread post by Fargo360 »

Has anyone retrofitted a points bike with one of these aftermarket ignition kits? I've been told that one of these would breathe new life into my old bike, but I'm just a little bit skeptical about putting something my bike wasn't designed with. If these kits are the cats meow though, maybe I'll give one a shot.

I've installed pointless ignition systems on a couple of older Sportsters and a 650 Triumph or two. They always worked and made tune ups a lot easier. Have you tried the relay power to the coil mod as discussed in the other post?

Yeah I would do it. It's almost amazing those things(points) even work at all....especially in those old V8s with the points, condensor, and rotor!

I'm building that coil kit right now and plan on putting it on this week. I was talking to my uncle who is an electrical engineer and he said I should look at putting an electronic ignition kit in. That's how I got on the subject. But they are like $175-200, and the coil kit was 20. So I'm going to do the coil kit for now and in the future when I have $200 to throw down I'll get one, maybe next year or so. I have a $20 a month allowance for my bike (otherwise I'd buy everything I see) so I should have the money for one saved up by next spring.

Um...if I get one of these kits in the future, do I have to "undo" this coil mod?

No you wouldn't have to undo the coil power mod.

So I installed the coil mod last night. I haven't fired the bike up yet because I took the pipes off to change the rear tire. But when I go to run it, if I did it wrong...what's going to happen?

It's going to let the coils do their job
What your doing is using the weakened voltage in the bikes OEM wiring to the coil to operate a relay that that connects a new, direct power source to the coils.

My book shows a blue wire and a white wire from the coils that connect to a blue/white wire. Use the blue/white wire to power the relay.

PMs are ok.
