i just got the cheap $3.99 for a pack of 20 earplugs at RiteAid and they worked just fine.

Also I think the OP is talking about earache from air pressure not from the actual engine revving noise (he equated it as similar to opening one car window) ; I've never experienced the air pressure problem only the engine noise problem. Doesn't the foam in the helmet block the air out of your ears?

If you go ride on a mountain road, you will get the altitude thing happening in your ears. The helmet doesn't help with that.

My full face helmet sure does block the wind though and it does help reduce engine noise. The noise difference between that and my half helmet is significant.

been using one for a few weeks and it works well. it b locks the wind from coming up into your helmet. i dont really like earplugs. this works pretty well, and i can even hear my headphones while on the highway.

This thread did get a bit off topic (I tried the mallet, but now my ears ring).....

Anyway this sock thing seems to be what I was looking for. I don't mind engine noise, it was the pressure pulses that were painful. Anyway, I guess my helmet is rather cheap being the full face flip up style; maybe next year I'll replace it. Only bought it cause I wear glasses and it's really nice to put them on and off with the face up.

I don't like ear plugs much and I have a flip helmet so I just got a neck guard it reduces the wind that goes into my helmet enough so it doesn't bother me, sounds just like a room fan or something.

I had all kinds of problems using the disposible plugs. I sprung for the custom ones. The guy that made my plugs said that my ear canals were very small and shaped funny. He wasn't surprised I had problems. BTW...my son was having issues with the disposible plugs too. Obviously we have the same shaped ear canals. I LOVE the custom ones. It takes me just a few seconds to put them in and they are very comfortable.

I just use the silicone ones on a string. I can't use the foamies. They irritate the hell out of my canals, then I get an infection. The silicone ones that look kinda like a miniature christmas tree are great. Just remove, wash in soapy water, shake off and replace when needed.
