I'm glad he's not too bummed out, and has the right attitude about getting back in the saddle. I'm surprised they splinted the finger; last time I broke a finger they just wrapped it and said, "don't break it again for the next 8 weeks."

Last year when I was new to my Bonneville I was spooked by someone coming out of a driveway fast. I grabbed a handful of front brake, no rear brake, hard enough to lock up the front wheel for a second. How I avoided going down, I don't know, but I'm sure the Bonnie's docile handling and relatively light weight (450 lbs) helped.

The real moral of the story is that there are no guarantees in motorcycling. Anything can happen. Ride smart and manage risk, but accept that anything can happen. If you can't accept that, stay away from motorcycles.

Well I'm glad to hear he is ok, its similar to what happened to my wife but hers was a yellow light turning red situation, whether blow it or stop and grabbed a handful of front brakes. My question to you is the helmet of your friend, you said it was scratched or scuffed but all his gear still works fine. Isnt a helmet a one drop deal? IMO I would suggest a new helmet regardless of how minor the impact was, but thats just me.

Glad it wasn't what I thought was gonna happen.

I don't know the correlation of that pond to the road, but I was expecting a large splash followed by a larger string of explitives.
Have fun on the open /¦\

Yeah this could have happened on any size bike he bought. I think what got him was his inexperience. More time in the saddle would have taught him to straighten the bike from the lean and then apply brakes slowly.

The learning curve on a smaller bike isn't as big though but like you said, he's a big boy and he made the decision.
