Well, when you get right down to it, the added pistons means that you can put more push on the crankshaft so yes, an inline 4 will make HP easier then a twin. But you're looking at an inline twin on ninja 650, so it's also sort of designed for horsepower over torque. It's the V-twin design that'll make big torque, which is why I laugh at the cruisers who brag about how much HP they're getting on their bikes with all the mods they've made.camthepyro wrote:I thought I4s made more hp, and twins made more torque?
A lot of it also has to do with tuning. The 599 has an engine pulled out of the CBR600F3 and when you dyno them one vs the other it has a little less HP then the same bike, but a little more torque.
I've yet to ride a ninja650, but I've ridden WITH a couple, and truth be told it'll do pretty much what my bike can do. Now from personal experience the 599 is a hell of a bike, but you aren't shortchanging yourself in any way if you decide to get the ninja. Hell, I would love to have a full fairing on some of my REALLY cold rides, hehe.
Don't forget about the SV650 - by all accounts it's a better bike then the ninja, and I would love to own one to convert into a full time race bike (next year, next year). I think it's better looking as well, but that's all relative.
With the 599 something to think about is potential resale - it is not a bike that is popular in North America. It doesn't fit into the cruiser or supersport category first off - which is a mark against it. Second she's pretty expensive for what she is (buy used if you can). And third, it just doesn't put out a supersports power... which to me isn't an issue, but talking with classmates it sure seems to be. If you're planning on selling this bike in the future be prepared to take a hit.
Anyways, get the bike that feels the best (or that your GF tells you feels the best). And you'll be happy no matter what.
Best of luck to you.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I would actually go straight out and buy a SV650 if I didn't think the were so god-awful ugly. If I could find a dealership with a 599 or a 919 I would consider them more, but I'm not going to buy a bike based on pictures and reviews. I like the 650R, and my gf likes it (she'll be willing to sit on the back, unlike the 636, which scared her just looking at it).

Well, it wasn't just her. The price of the bike was a factor, and I didn't like how far forward I had t lean on the 636 and the CBR600RR, it was incredibly uncomfortable, althought I'm sure I could get used to it eventually.
