I thought this was a great article. I hope it hasn't been posted before. If so, my apologies.

Great article. Just what I should have read before I tried to shoot a light when I saw a cop and hit the brakes hard. It was good panic brake practice but there was absolutely no reason to make that light by a trition.

great warning. not a bad metaphor for how to live one's life, either.

Sometimes I feel like this and other times I don't, but this is a great article. This is a mindset I need to consciously adopt, like when I'm running a bit late for work.

Sometimes, when you're riding, I'll look down at the speedo and say to myself "dude, you need to slow down", and it's not necessarily because I'm in a hurry, but just because I'm riding faster than I should. I went for a leisurely ride around the back streets of my town yesterday and that was more fun than anything else I've done. Makes you think.

Good find.

there's a tradition in Russia that before you leave on a trip, after all of the mayhem of packing and organizing, right before you walk out the door and start the journey you stop, sit on your suitcase, and take a minute of quiet so that your head is in the right place for the trip. maybe not a bad idea to work that concept into the pre-ride inspection.

or am I sounding like a flakey new ager?

no, no, it's a good idea. I stand by that.

That's an excellent thing to do - I do that on my bike! (Edit: I mean, I sit on the bike and relax...no suitcases.)

I'll either do it when I'm warming it up, or when I'm about to pull out of the driveway - it's good to take a minute to collect yourself and get your mind on the ride. I notice that when I don't do it, pulling out of the driveway is a lot sloppier than it should be - because maybe I'm in a hurry, or something, and my mind isn't in the right place. In my short riding career so far, I've realized that a large percentage of riding is mental.

Give it a try sometime when the bike is warming up, I think you'll be all the better for it.
