? about Batteries and Battery tenders.

#1 Unread post by NewGuy »

Well the 7 year old battery on my V-star didn't retain enough of a charge to crank over the engine after just three and half weeks of sitting in a storage unit. So I'm thinking that I should get a new battery, but I want to keep it conditioned so it will have a nice long life.

My question is, will there be any problem bringing the battery back to my apartment and connecting it to a tender like the "Battery Tender Jr." on the weeks when the weather is too bad to ride, or do I need to have it installed in the bike?

My storage unit doesn't have an electrical outlet I can use so plugging it in while the battery is in the bike isn't really an option.

Also, anyone have any tips for removing/installing the battery on a '01 V-star 650 Classic?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's safe to remove the battery. But I wouldn't keep it on carpet or anything that you really value.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Isn't there also a possibility of outgassing? I wouldn't keep the battery under your bed.

Depends on the battery type :P

If you have a safely vented area, That's where I'd put it...

seven years is nothing to sneeze at for a m/c battery. If you replaced it get a gel mat type- they are infinitely better.... or maybe measurably better.

If you were to measure how better it was the result would be a lot. A lot of better.

I'm not sure, but I feel you might be saying better.

I would probably look towards getting at least, a sealed type battery rather than a normal cheap one.

Also (as I found out) keep a set of magnetic screwdrivers, a torch, and allen keys near the bike too. I got mightily annoyed when the nut off one of the battery terminals popped out and disappeared into the bike (Had charged the battery at work - it was flat).
