Riding down Rt. 13 at 65 mph, southern Illinois, July, on my roomate's Kawasaki 125. No helmet of course, this is 1980.
Grasshopper: at least four inches long. Right smack in the space below the nose above the upper lip. I'm sure the impact created a bright green cloud of bug-gut aerosol at least four feet in diameter. Not to mention an instant blue-black bruise and a fat lip.
Did I mention I was on the way to cover the Jackson County Republican caucus for the (liberal) Southern Illinoisian newspaper?

Was riding last week wearing my full-face helmet at about 50mph when a bee flew into the collar of my leather and stung me. Got to the side of the road without too much trouble but my neck was about twice it's size for almost a week. I started wearing a full-face helmet after a bee flew into my open-faced helmet a few years ago and got caught in the ear cup. It was quite disconcerting trying to slow down and pull over while listening to all the buzzing and expecting to get stung at any moment. Once I whipped the helmet off, it just flew away without stinging. So I don't think they're attracted to any one type of helmet, it's just a mid-air collision thing.
I just learned that a Harley rider got stung in a neighboring town a few months back and crashed his bike and was killed, so I consider myself lucky 2 times over.

I haven't been hit with any BIG bugs yet(and I hope I never will), but have had a bee and some unknown bug fly into my helmet and I've also splattered a whole bunch of small little gnats against the face shield. If they HAVE to get near me, I definitely prefer them on the outside, squished, of the face shield than on the inside, alive, of the helmet.

Me too! I've heard all kinds of bee in the helmet stories. That's one thing I dont want to experience!Dragon on Wheels wrote:I haven't been hit with any BIG bugs yet(and I hope I never will), ... ... I was wondering if I was the only one with the bug problem. My husband and I was riding this past weekend and seemed like I had all the bugs on my windshield and face shield. He does not wear a face shield, but he has a bigger windshield. Seems like the bugs just fly by him and get me. I was glad I wore my face shield.

Oh man I really don't want to JINX myself here. *knocks on wood paneling* I haven't had a HUGE bug hit my shield yet but today I had SOMETHING smack me in the shoulder and if I wasn't wearing leathers that would've left a bruise for sure.
It felt like someone punched me while I was riding my motorcycle.
Do you think having a Fairing on the front of your motorcycle does anything to deflect insects more?

At first I thought Steve was very lucky and I very unlucky with the bugs. But I think you are right about the fairing and also the windshield. One of our next projects is to put a fairing on the sidecar.Brackstone wrote:Oh man I really don't want to JINX myself here. *knocks on wood paneling* I haven't had a HUGE bug hit my shield yet but today I had SOMETHING smack me in the shoulder and if I wasn't wearing leathers that would've left a bruise for sure. I would say that the front of my fairing and windscreen on the EX500 takes out about four times the amount of critters that my faceshield does on the helmet. Sounds like a fun science fair project for any kids out there though!
Even though the windscreen on the bike dosn't come up that high, and I think the windblast hits me about shoulder or upper chest level most (I'm 6'2")... I think that perhaps the turbulance might alter the flight path of the incomming organic projectiles... so the unlucky few meet up with their demise. To bad that didn't happen when that bird got spooked from an 18-wheeler under an over pass and decided to fly low enough to the ground to impact my shoulder at 65 mph. That one took a few weeks to start feeling better.
