The problem is that you bought the bike right before people really started losing their jobs. You're selling at a point of low consumer confidence. There are a million sporties on the market right now. Unfortunately, the cards are stacked against anyone trying to sell a bike (or most anything for that matter). Keep in mind that you might have better success if you wait for a few weeks for the "riding season" to begin. Good luck with the sale.

Well KBB is a little better than a rough guideline, especially for a completely stock bike. The way I've negotiated used bikes for private sales is halfway between KBB Trade-in and KBB Retail. I certainly wouldn't expect more than a dealer would get selling a used bike (KBB Retail) which should be about $6200 for your bike. I also wouldn't accept less than you could get trading it in to a dealer (KBB Trade-in) which should be about $4200 for your bike.

The only thing that's hurting you right now is there are some people taking advantage of the "Ride Free" program where people could buy a 2009 Sportster and get full MSRP when trading it in on new H-D bike. That means there are more used Sportsters available through dealers, who will have to move those bikes. That could affect the price of older Sportsters in the used market, especially ones like yours that were made before 2007 when EFI became standard. You might get lucky though and find a gear head that prefers a bike without "fuel infection."

Good luck.

I re-listed the bike for $5,000 and it sold in four hours, I received full payment within 24 hrs from eBay classifieds. Some guy in NY has been watching for months and pounced instantly. $5000 in my hand is just fine with me. Cash in hand is better than my ad sitting on the net with 10,000 others just like it. Thanks to all for your input!!!!

5K is great. Congrats. Your sale went much like my sale of my 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 250. But the guy that bought it off me said - you got really lucky - lots of times there are a lot of trouble with things like that.

Congrats man! Glad it worked out for ya. You must've had a nice XL for someone to jump on it that quickly.
