Diggin' the SuperHawk...but...

#1 Unread post by Fargo360 »

So I'm loving the SuperHawk...I love they way it rides and sounds. Only thing I'm not digging is I only get about 87 miles until the fuel light comes on...with rough math that's about 20 mpg. Is something going wrong here?

Have you done a fill-up to fill-up calculation? Sometimes those fuel lights are way off...

They are known for very poor mileage, as low as in the range of 25-30. That being said, 20 is extremely low, even for that bike.

Do a correct calculation. Fill-up, put 100 miles (approximately) on the bike, back to the same station, same pump, and fill-up. Now divide the miles traveled by the gallons used.

Go find a forum specifically for your bike and read all you can till you find the guy that cleans and rebuilds carbs (for money) that everybody raves about. Send him your carbs. Listen to his advice for reinstalling and you'll get the best mpg you can.

Or try cleaning them yourself.

I owned one for 11 years and 87miles before the light is about bang on if you are relatively easy on the throttle. You are good for about 30 more if you barely crack the throttle and nurse it to a station. I've never ran anything out of gas before in my life but with the VTR I managed to do it 3 times over the 11 years. I also filled it up 8 times in one day on a tour once.

So here are your options:
1. Optimizing the throttle position sensor got me about an extra 10% in mileage. I had some one do it for me and it was effective.

2. The rest of the world outside of N.A. got an additional 3 litre tank in 2001 onward. Find one on ebay. That is what I would do if I still have mine.

Or:

3. Try a 98-01 VFR fuel tank. Apparently they can be made to fit and don't look too bad.

Holy Smoke, the Buell gets 30 to 33 mpg. I thought that was bad.

Really? I know the Sportster jugged Buells get phenomenal mileage. I thought it would be similar with the Rotax Buells.

Sweet looking bike. Perhaps your idle is a little high? I get about 30-35 on my little 600, so it's not illogical to conclude your mileage is normal.
