Contact Lenses

#1 Unread post by mogster »

Does anyone ride wearing contact lenses?

I wear reading specs + I have varifocals for work. I have tried the varifocals for driving but didn't like them as they made me a bit dizzy. No way would I risk them on the bike.

I like to wear wrap round shades but prescription lenses would cost at least £150.

So as a compromise I thought I might try contact lenses (never used them before).
I would only need correction in my left eye.

However, I am concerned what wiould happen if say I got grit in my eye with a lense in.

What do you guys do about this?

It would probably hurt just as much as if you got grit in your eyes without the lenses in.

I've ridden with contacts and glasses. Dust and sand still come up through the bottom of my full face helmet and sting a bit. It has never been bad enough to make me pull over. With the contact lenses I blink a lot and it usually clears up. Carry lens solution with you - if it was bad enough you'd have to pull over, pull the lens and rinse it.

Cheers guys.

I had a word with my optician & he can supply me with disposable lenses for about £30 (including eyetest). They have a shelf life of about 2yrs so if I buy the minimum 30 days supply & only use them occasionally it will work out as quite economical. I think at that low price I am willing to at least try them as I am definately noticing poorer vision when driving the car.

I wish I could wear contacts since it's one less layer that could fog. Bought a few pairs a coupla years ago and just couldn't get the hang of putting them on (poking your eye and all that).

Mogster, that's what I use - I tend to wear my glasses - no amount of impressing women with contacts would get over the fact that I've got four kids!

I normally wear contacts. However, I bought a pair of prescription sun shades at zennioptical.com for $15 shipped. They work great for riding around town and I even modified them to fit my helmet better. I would never had wanted to try that on the expensive types.

I used to wear contacts but had to stop as my eyes weren't breathing enough and it was causing the veins to surface in my eyeball! Talk about increased pressure... not good for the eyes!

Just last Autumn I finally got a pair of prescription sunglasses and I LOVE THEM, they are the best thing since sliced bread!

MOG - good luck with the contacts, let us know how you get on!

I would think wearing contacts you run the risk of having them blow out at high speeds if you don't have a full face helmet. I have prescription wrap around sun and clear classes. They work great! They have a removable seal around the edge that keeps air from blowing up the lens into your eye too.

People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.
