Lending / Borrowing Bikes

#1 Unread post by mogster »

Have got a colleague at work who loves my bike, he has a Triumph Daytona.

He has asked me if he can borrow/hire my bike for a 2 week trip to the Pyrannees (French/Spanish border).

Thing is he probably earns at least 5x what I do (Consultant Surgeon), so I think he should just buy a new bike!

I am not going to lend him bike for all sorts of reasons but mainly if it ever makes that trip it should be me riding!

My answer might be different if it was good mate asking.

Just wondered whether you guys ever had to lend or borrow a bike?

No, don't do it. I've been on both sides and say no even when offered bikes when I don't have one. I wrecked one because of poor maintenance on his bike, I will not be making the same mistake again, plus I don't want anyone else wrecking my bike!

I have had two different friends wreck two different bikes of mine. JUST DON'T!!!!! For one reason your bike is damaged for another you get to be really pissed at a friend. I will never let anyone ride my bikes again. Maybe my brother and my uncles because i know they will respect my bike, I know they can ride and not act like a fool. But that's it.

No way, no how, no body. I let my little brother use my Triumph once. He hit a liquor store. I had to pay for a plate glass window and all the liquor he smashed before I got my damaged bike back. Then I got to pay for a new front end for the bike. I didn't speak to him for ten years.

Usually when people say "I'm gonna hit a liquor store" they mean go shopping at one, not literally hit it!

That's my brother. Or should I say that was my brother. He's better now.

Interesting comments guys & I don't feel so mean now as you all agree I should say no.

My fella also says no way & as he bought me the bike in the first place I can't really argue with that!

Seems to me that years ago bikers got swapped about more often. Can't figure out whether that was because bikes less valuable or just the naivety of youth?

That was meant to read bikes (not bikers), tho it would put a new twist to the question.

Perhaps you could use your insurance company as an excuse. If someone else wrecks my bike, I and/or my insurance company has to pay, not the party that wrecked it.

This might be a nice way of telling him "no".

Back in the day (the 80's), my mates and I were always trading off our bikes. But not anymore.
Always ask why.
