To Lend Out Your Bike Or Not

#1 Unread post by mswarrior »

I learned this lesson very early in life. My eldest brother just bought his new 86 Ninja 1000 and traveled from Alberta to Ontario to visit the rest of us. The middle brother thought the bike was the coolest thing ever and hasled my eldest bro the whole time he was home to take it for a ride. I was only 12 at the time and was happy just to look at it. On the last day before my eldest bro was to head back to Alberta he finally gave in to the whinning. He let him take it out for a ride, he had a licence for it and owned a small enduro and was cautioned about the raw power the bike had and off he went. Five minutes had past when we all heard the sound of ambulance sirens heading in the direction we saw him go. In the car we went and there he was, in a ditch, broken collar bone and road rash over 20% of his body. The bike was a total write off and deemed unrepairable by the insurance. There was the eldest bro, without a bike and the ins was not going to cover it. To this day he has never been repaid for the damage done to his bike and hasn't spoken to my other bro in over 15 years. After I saw this fiasco at 12 yrs old I vowed and still vow that no one will ever ride any bike I own.
Many say live to ride, I say ride is to live.

My closeest friend and riding buddy is the only one I would really switch bikes with. I know that if he crashed it, he is good for it and vice-versa...

Oddly enough, my brother is the only person I'll let ride my bike. He and I ride together when busy schedules permit, and we often "swap out" for part of an outing. He's a good rider... almost as good as I!
Let me get this straight... it's one down and four up, right?

I let my brother ride my old bike since it's only a 440 and I don't care if it gets crashed now :D .
But as for my honda, no way. Wouldn't even let an experienced biker on it.
Like letting someone else have sex with your wife. You just don't do it!
Actually I guess it's not like that. But I'm tired and trying to make an analogy.
It's shut up time  .

Someone I know well with an equal or better bike I might do a swap/test ride. Otherwise I would not chance it, the risk is too high.

Best friend and family members is it. If the bike gets crashed it can be replaced. Just so they don't get hurt would be my main worry. The relationship with these people means more then anything to me. If they want to take it for a ride the keys are theirs.

The word "never" plays a key role with me.
