You're making the assumption you have skills.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

that's true it can happen.

for me... skills leads to comfort.

before i look so stiff on the bike... but now im more loose and comfortable.
This is what I asked DH when he was saying he was ready to handle a bigger bike.

For regular cruising and riding down the highway and streets, I can understand one would be comfortable riding the bike.

But what about those situations where emergency manuevers must be used? Are you confident and comfortable performing them when they show up unexpectedly?

Do you know you can 100% without a doubt handle the bike?

Are there any situations that come up that you don't like to handle?

Just things to think about. I think if there are some things that bother you, then maybe a little more time on that bike is in order.

We already know the answer to that. A little gravel and down goes the bike.

There is no real answer to this question. The answer depends on the rider, how much he/she rides a week, what size bike he/she currently has and another one for me atleast is current financial situation. And age I guess if you still live with your parents.
There is most definitely an answer to his question, which was :
So my question to all of you is, how long was it until you moved on from your beginner bike size to a larger?
If you've moved up, how long was it? If not, then you're correct, you may not have an answer yet. It ain't rocket science.

bought my 750 shadow 3years or more ago as first bike.planned on trading up or handing it down and buying a bigger one but instead bought a 250ninja for my fiance to learn on. frankly i like the shadow, there are times i want a bigger/different bike, but i don't think i "need" to upgrade any time soon.

the 250 might turn into a 650 in the spring, but there is no rush there either.
