Opinion on price of bike?

#1 Unread post by sublumjack »

I am currently looking for my first bike, so i dont want to spend too much, but would prefer not to get ripped off either. I dont really know how fast/much bikes depreciate so i was hoping some people could give me thier opinion as to whether or not the prices asked are reasonable. Also, do you think either of these twop bikes are an appropriate bike for a begginer?

I have heard alot of people say that anything above 600 is too much for a first bike...but i thought since the 600 ninja is an 88 perhaps it wouldent be as powerfull and therefore more appropriate for a beginner? also, what are the chances that these bikes will require alot of maintence due to thier age? thanks alot to any one who helps me out!

Those are some old bikes. I wouldn't get something that was kicking around when Moses was in the desert, but others might disagree. As for that 600, it still gives out around 100 hp, so it's pretty powerful for a newbie bike. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting it. If you think you can handle it and are willing to risk life and limb in the process, go for it.

That GS550 Would be the one that I would look at. And yes old motorcycles might take a bit of extra care but I love my 28 year old XS1100. If you don't mind getting a bit of dirt on your hands you should be ok. I don't ride anything that is not at least 25 years old. I have bought many new motorcycles but I like working on and bringing the old ones back to their former glory.

I agree.

Nothing wrong with an old bike if it's running well. My bike is 20 years old and it runs like a top.

I agree also with the suszuki, you may have to fix some stuff but you'll also get a good education on how bikes work, I know I have.
I believe in understanding my machines, not being a joe pro mechanic, just understanding them, the tank bone's connected to the carb bone........
ect.
I bought a clymer manual for my bike and have read through it and it gave me a better understanding of the workings of the bike.

+1 on the GS550. Assuming the odometer is accurate 19K miles is not bad at all for a bike that old. But according to the ad it's already sold, did you manage to buy it?
